CHARLESTON, W. Va. – Women's tennis fell in a tough road loss against non-conference foe Fairmont State University Saturday afternoon, 4-3.
Sophomore Liza Akimenko won by retirement at No. 1 singles as fellow sophomore Katya Akimenko picked up a 6-1, 6-3 victory at No. 2 over her opponent.
Senior Aya Melhem secured the Cavs third and final singles win of the day at No. 3, defeating Fairmont's Isadora Matos 6-1, 7-5. Freshman Megan Harwood dropped a tie breaker match at No. 4 singles, falling 7-5, 4-6, 10-8 to the Fighting Falcons' Mackenzie Sorton while Hall and Dishner were defeated at the No. 5 and No. 6 position, respectively.
In doubles play, Liza and Katya Akimenko recorded the sole Cavalier victory at No. 1 with a 6-2 win over their opponents. Harwood and Hall dropped their match at No.2, 6-2, while Melhem and Morris fell at No. 3, 6-4, to Fairmont's Janel Little and Trang Nguyen.
UVa-Wise will return to action tomorrow for a 2 p.m. match against Milligan College at the Jim and Betty Humphreys Tennis Complex.
