CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Cavs dropped their road match against Queens University of Charlotte Saturday afternoon, 3-0 (25-11, 25-9, 25-12).
UVa-Wise (1-16, 0-13 SAC) and Queens (14-4, 11-2 SAC) kept it close early to open the match but the Royals gained the advantage, up by double-digits late for a 19-9 lead. The Royals stayed on top to take the first frame 25-11 for a 1-0 Queens lead to start the match.
A 5-0 run led to an 11-4 Queens lead as the Cavaliers took a timeout in the second set. UVa-Wise gained a double-digit advantage later in the set before taking the second 25-9.
The Royals won six straight points to open the third set and didn't let up as Queens went up 16-7 over the Cavs as UVa-Wise called a timeout. Queens stayed on top to take the third set 25-12 and win the match with a 3-0 sweep of the Cavs.
Sophomore Abigail Byington and junior Madelyn Lawrence each posted four kills apiece to lead the Cavs while Lawrence posted a team-high .222 attack percentage. Freshman Zoe Avery tallied 13 assists in the loss while senior Morgan Milligan led the Cavs with 11 digs followed by sophomore Matelyn Gibson who notched eight digs against the Royals.
Head coach Kristen Salyer's team will return to action Tuesday for a 7 p.m. match against Tusculum University inside the David J. Prior Convocation Center.
