Cavaliers Fall to Catawba on the Road

SALISBURY, N.C. – UVa-Wise was tripped up in a road test at Catawba Friday night, 3-0 (25-8, 25-12, 25-18).

Catawba (5-10, 4-8 SAC) jumped out to an early lead over UVa-Wise with a 12-4 run putting the Indians ahead 20-6 in the first set. Catawba took a 1-0 lead with a 25-8 set one win.

The Cavs (1-15, 0-12 SAC) trailed by just four points early in set two, but the Indians would double their lead for a 16-8 advantage as UVa-Wise called a timeout. The Cavs fell in the second set 25-12 as Catawba extended their lead to 2-0 in the match.

After falling behind to start the third set, UVa-Wise came back to knot the match at 10-10 on a kill by junior Madelyn Lawrence. A quick 4-0 run for the Indians extended their advantaged to 15-11 as the Cavs took a timeout. UVa-Wise cut the Indians lead to three points later in the third, but Catawba rallied to go ahead 21-15 late before taking the third set, 25-18, to earn the sweep.

Sophomore Kelsey Green led the Cavs with seven kills while junior Brooke Abbott posted five kills alongside a .625 attack percentage. Senior Morgan Milligan recorded a team-high nine digs while freshman Zoe Avery dished out 22 assists in the loss.

Head coach Kristen Salyer's squad will return to action on the road tomorrow against Queens (N.C.) with first serve slated for 2 p.m.
