Storylines – vs West Virginia state
Having lost six of seven games, West Virginia State enters Wednesday game in 10th place in the Mountain East Conference standings. The Yellow Jackets continue to play up-tempo which has led to some big scoring nights but difficulty on the defensive end. Veteran coach Charles Marshall's club ranks 11th out of 12 teams in scoring defense allowing 86.5 points per game. West Virginia State has allowed 90 or more points six times this season, including four of the last seven games. The fast paced play has allowed for balanced scoring as seven players are averaging at least 6.6 points per game. Virginia Beach, Va. product Jordan Miller is leading the way by averaging 13.7 points a contest. The guard enters the game against UVa-Wise having reached double figure scoring in 10 of her last 11 games, including four in a row. In its first meeting against the Cavaliers, sophomore Lyrin Hatcher scored a career-high 25 points in a losing effort. The Jackets benefited greatly from the free throw line in the first meeting going to the line 44 times, converting 30 of the attempts.
In a three-way tie for fifth place, UVa-Wise will look to build off its 81-61 win at Wheeling Jesuit Saturday. In the win, senior "Quick" Gomez recorded the first triple-double in the NCAA Division II era by tallying 12 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists in the triumph. The Cavaliers will have an opportunity to sweep West Virginia State while also winning back-to-back games for the first time this season. In an 87-84 win over the Yellow Jackets at the Prior Center, Jamie Cluesman's team received a buzzer beating half-court shot from sophomore JK Cummings to claim the win. UVa-Wise scored a season-high 87 points in the game while making a season-best 11 3-pointers. Freshman Mackenzie King scored a season-high 21 points in the first meeting while Hanna Oliver made six 3-pointers en route to a season-high 20 points. Junior Cynita Webb could play a big role Wednesday, the forward posted 14 points and 10 rebounds against the Yellow Jackets in the first meeting on 6-of-7 shooting despite being limited to 17 minutes due to foul trouble.
