WISE - - UVa-Wise picked up another win inside the David J. Prior Convocation Center on "Rainey Day" with a 3-0 (25-4, 25-3, 25-8) sweep of Bluefield State College Thursday night.
The Cavaliers (4-13, 1-4 MEC) were led by Madelyn Lawrence who posted 10 kills with a .769 hitting percentage and two blocks in the win. Sophomore Brooke Abbott had six kills while sophomore setter Scout Burge tallied 18 assists. Junior Briana Kerr had 10 of the team's 27 service aces while senior Kyra Jessee and junior Morgan Milligan each posted seven service aces on the night.
UVa-Wise controlled the game pulling ahead 17-3 to start in set one. Bluefield State (0-9) would be unable to get anything going as UVa-Wise went on an eight-point run to give the Cavs a 25-4 win in the first set.
The Cavs sustained momentum heading into the second set with a 10-point 13-3 lead early. UVa-Wise would go on to take the last 12 points on their way to a 25-3 set two win. The Cavs had 10 service aces in the set along with eight kills and hit .571.
Only down three to start, the Big Blues would try to turn thing around trailing 8-5 in the third set. UVa-Wise would extend its lead to 16-6 as Bluefield State called a timeout. The game would end with a 9-2 run by the Cavs for a 25-8 set three victory and a 3-0 win over the Big Blues.
UVa-Wise posted 27 kills, 25 assists, and 27 service aces with a .438 hitting percentage. Bluefield State registered four kills with three assists and nine digs.
The Cavs will now hit the road for a four-game stretch starting with Lees-McRae College on Tuesday, Oct. 2 at 6 p.m.
