ATHENS, W. Va. - - Volleyball dropped its match against Concord University in straight sets, 3-0 (25-14, 25-16, 25-18), on the road Tuesday evening.
Sophomore Brooke Abbott led the Cavaliers in kills with nine along with four blocks and hit .368 in the match. Freshman Matelyn Gibson had seven kills while sophomore Madelyn Lawrence posted six kills with a .364 hitting percentage. Sophomore Makayla Ledford registered 27 assists while junior Morgan Milligan tallied 12 digs.
UVa-Wise (3-13, 1-4 MEC) fell behind early in the first set as the Mountain Lions of Concord claimed an 8-3 lead early. Concord (4-15, 1-3 MEC) propelled itself to a 10-point, 18-8 lead, before taking the first set, 25-14.
The Mountain Lions did not lose momentum heading into the second set as they posted a .481 hitting percentage, holding a 10-2 lead to start. Concord would maintain the lead throughout the set with an 18-10 lead later in the second. The Mountain Lions would win set two, 25-16.
Concord pushed ahead early once again in the third set, taking an 8-2 advantage over the Cavs. UVa-Wise would climb back to cut its deficit to two points, 11-9. Concord would extend their lead later in the set, 18-13, as the Cavs took a timeout. Concord hit .357 in the final set as they went on to earn a 25-18 set three victory over the Cavs.
UVa-Wise notched 32 kills with 32 assists and 27 digs. Concord finished with 42 kills, 40 assists and 31 digs in the match.
Up next, the Cavs will face Bluefield State College at 7 p.m. on Thursday inside the David J. Prior Center.
