UVa-Wise Drops Match Against Charleston

WISE - - UVa-Wise volleyball fell 3-0, (25-18, 25-22, 25-18) in a Saturday afternoon matchup against the University of Charleston.

Freshman Matelyn Gibson led the Cavaliers (6-9, 1-3 MEC) with 11 kills and hit .375 in the match. Sophomore Madelyn Lawrence posted a .400 hitting percentage with eight kills and five blocks while sophomore setter Makayla Ledford recorded a double-double with 28 assitss and 12 digs in the loss.

Charleston (6-9, 2-0 MEC) came out hot in set one, posting a hitting percentage of .303 in the set. The Golden Eagles pushed ahead 10-4 early before the Cavaliers managed to get within two points on a kill by sophomore Brooke Abbott later in the set as Charleston led 16-14. The Golden Eagles would win seven consecutive points for a 24-16 lead before taking the first set, 25-18.

The second set proved to be a battle for the two teams as they traded leads early in the set. A kill by the Golden Eagles would put them ahead 12-7 as the Cavs took a timeout. Charleston would continue to extend its lead to eight points, 18-10, later in the set. UVa-Wise would attempt to come back for the win as they came within two-points late, 24-22, but the Golden Eagles would hold on for a 25-22 set two victory.

UVa-Wise jumped ahead to a 6-4 lead to start off the third set, but the Golden Eagles climbed back to go ahead by two points, 10-8, as UVa-Wise called a timeout. Charleston would take a five-point lead later in the set, but the Cavs would fight back to a two-point deficit, 20-18 on another Abbott kill. The Golden Eagles would take the last five points as they went on to win the set, 25-18.

The Cavs registered 33 kills, 31 assists, and 34 digs in the match. Charleston posted 44 kills, 41 assists, and 38 digs in the win.

UVa-Wise returns to action on Tuesday, Sept. 25 as they take on Concord University at 7 p.m. on the road.
