WISE - - Volleyball fell in straight sets to West Virginia State University, 3-0 (25-14, 27-25, 25-12) Tuesday night.
The Cavaliers were led by freshman Matelyn Gibson who posted seven kills followed by sophomore Brooke Abbott who recorded six. Freshman Kelsey Green and senior Kyra Jessee both registered five kills while Jessee also had nine digs. Junior Morgan Milligan led the team with 10 digs while sophomore setter Makayla Ledford tallied 23 assists on the night.
After trailing much of the first set, UVa-Wise struggled to get back in the game as West Virginia State took a 10-point, 19-9 lead. The Yellow Jackets continued to dominate the first set, claiming a 25-14 win.
UVa-Wise would regain its composure going into the second set as the Cavs took the lead early before the Yellow Jackets fought their way back to tie the match 23-23. The two teams would tie the set two more times before West Virginia State won its last two points on a pair of kills to take the set, 27-25.
The Yellow Jackets controlled the third set with a 14-4 advantage over UVa-Wise. West Virginia State posted a .438 hitting percentage in the final set as they continued to maintain a double-digit lead, earning a 25-12 set three victory.
UVa-Wise had 28 kills with 28 assists and 38 digs while West Virginia State finished with 48 kills and 46 digs while hitting .333 in the match.
The Cavs return to action on Saturday with a 3 p.m. matchup against the University of Charleston inside the David J. Prior Convocation Center.
