WISE - - UVa-Wise men's tennis earned a huge conference victory over West Virginia State University Thursday afternoon, 6-3.
The Cavaliers (3-13, 1-6 MEC) had their first win of the day at No. 2 doubles as Viktor Tunnikov and Chris Armistead defeated their opponent, 8-4. At No. 1 doubles, Andrii Rutnytskyi and Ethan Herron fell 8-6 while Coleton Burke and John Hamilton were defeated at the No. 3 spot, 8-5.
Rutnytskyi had a dominating win at the No. 1 singles spot, 6-1, 6-2 over West Virginia State's Caleb Stokley. Tunnikov defeated his opponent at the No. 2 position, 6-3, 6-3, while Chris Armistead overpowered the Yellow Jackets' Ethan Cross, 6-1, 6-1, at the number three spot. Herron dropped a close match at No. 4, 6-4, 7-5 while Burke pulled out a win at the number five position, 7-5, 6-3. Hamilton wrapped up the day for the Cavs with a solid performance at the No. 6 spot as he defeated his opponent, 6-0, 6-1.
UVa-Wise will return to action Saturday, April 14, as the Cavaliers host Milligan College on Senior Day. First serve is scheduled for 11 a.m. at the Jim and Betty Humphreys Tennis Complex.
