Box Score 2 WISE - - Men's tennis was swept, 9-0, while women's tennis earned a 6-3 victory against Salem International University Thursday evening.
Men's tennis (2-11, 0-4 MEC) had close matches at the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles spots. Andrii Rutnytskyi and Ethan Herron fell to Salem International's Gregor Lainer and Patryk Garwacki at No. 1, 8-6, while Viktor Tunnikov and Chris Armistead were defeated by the Tigers' Andres Padilla and Toni Shaw, 9-7, at No. 2 doubles. Coleton Burke and John Hamilton dropped their doubles match at the No. 3 spot, 8-3.
Rutnytskyi was upset by Garacki at No. 1 singles, 6-3, 6-0, while Tunnikov won two games in each set as he fell to Lainer, 6-2, 6-2 at number two. At the No. 3 spot, Armistead fell 6-3, 6-2 while Herron won four games in his first set, but was ultimately defeated 6-4, 6-1, at the No. 4 spot by Padilla. Burke was defeated, 6-2, 7-5, at No. 5 singles while Hamilton was swept, 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 6 spot.
Women's tennis (8-11) opened up doubles play with Daria Tyshchenko and Serena Burgess earning an 8-4 victory at the No. 1 spot. Aya Melhem and Montana Hill dominated their opponents with an 8-1 win over Salem International's Shelby Turpin and Waverly Federico at number two doubles. Gabrielle Beville and Ashley Cullen were swept at the number three spot, 8-0.
Tyshchenko fell, 7-5, 6-2, to Kristina Vuksanovic at No. 1 singles. Melhem overpowered the Tigers' Turpin at the number two spot with a 6-1, 6-0 win while Hill swept her opponent at the No. 3 position, 6-0, 6-0. Burgess earned an 8-1 win against Salem International's Brianna Vasquez at the No. 4 spot. Beville added another Cavalier win as she went 6-2, 6-2 against the Tigers' Perez at No. 5. Cullen won three games in each set as she fell to her opponent, 6-3, 6-3 at the No. 6 singles spot.
Men's tennis will face West Liberty University in a home conference match on Saturday, March 31, at 1 p.m. Women's tennis will return to action on Sunday, April 8, for a 2 p.m. road match against the University of Pikeville to wrap up their spring season.
