Box Score SHEPHERDSTOWN, W. Va. - - The Cavaliers were edged by Shepherd University Sunday, 5-4. Seniors Viktor Tunnikov and Chris Armistead won both their singles and doubles matches.
UVa-Wise (2-10, 0-4) opened up doubles play with Andrii Rutnytskyi and Ethan Herron at the No. 1 position. The pair fell in a close 8-5 match against Carter Davis and Evan Dokken. Tunnikov and Armistead downed Shepherd's Clayton Smith and Kaleb Lochner, 9-7, at No. 2 while Coleton Burke and John Hamilton were swept, 8-0, by the Rams' Austin Thomas and Lewis Charette.
At singles, Rutnytskyi fell to Davis at the number one spot, 6-0, 6-2. Tunnikov picked up his second win of the day defeating the Rams' Dokken, 6-2, 6-4, at the No. 2 spot while Armistead earned another victory on the day at No. 3 singles as he routed Shepherd's Lochner, 6-2, 6-0. Herron had success at the number four spot with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Charette. Burke fell at the No. 5 singles position, 6-0, 6-1, to Thomas while Hamilton was upset at the No. 6 spot, 6-1, 6-0, by Smith.
Men's tennis will pause league play for a non-conference matchup against Salem international University at 3 p.m. on Friday, Mar. 30. The Cavs will return to action on Saturday, Mar. 31, for a 1 p.m. conference match against West Liberty University. Both matches will be played at the Jim and Betty Humphreys Tennis Complex.
