UVa-Wise Tennis Falls to Lees-McRae

BRISTOL, Tenn. - - UVa-Wise men's and women's tennis faced Lees-McRae in a midweek matchup. The Cavalier men's team (2-8, 0-2 MEC) fell 8-1 while the Cavalier women (7-11) were swept, 9-0, by the Bobcats.

At No. 1 doubles for the men's team, Andrii Rutnytskyi and Ethan Herron were defeated, 8-4, by the Bobcats' Gabe Muniz and Sebastian Zuhr. At number two, senior duo Viktor Tunnikov and Chris Armistead topped Lees-McRae's Matthew Meluch and Rusty Batten, 8-6. Coleton Burke and John Hamilton dropped their match at the number three spot, 8-3, to Colton Porres and Bradon Caldwell.

Rutnytskyi played at No.1 singles, falling 6-2, 6-2, to Muniz. Tunnikov was defeated at number two in a close tiebreaker match, 4-6, 6-0, 10-4, while Armistead fell to the Bobcats' Meluch, 7-6(5), 6-2 at the No. 3 spot. Herron dropped his match, 8-3, at No. 4 singles, while Burke fell, 8-0, to Lees-McRae's Caldwell at the No. 5 position. John Hamilton was topped by the Bobcats' Porres at the number six spot, 8-1.

Playing at the No.1 doubles spot for the women's team, Daria Tyshchenko and Aya Melhem played a tough match against Lees-McRae's Sandy Allen and Mackenzie Langmade, falling in a tiebreaker, 9-8 (7-5). At No. 2 doubles, Serena Burgess and Montana Hill were defeated by the Bobcats' Jaden Acklin and Rebecca Pierce, 8-4, while Gabrielle Beville and Ashley Cullen were routed at the number three spot by Lees-McRae's Dakota Tittle and Emily Harrison, 8-1.

In her second tiebreaker match of the day, Tyshchenko fell to Allen, 6-4, 4-6, 10-5, at the number one singles spot. At No. 2, Melhelm fell in a tiebreaker, 6-3, 3-6, 10-5, to Langmade while Hill was defeated, 8-2, at the number three spot. Burgess and Beville both fell to their opponents by a score of 8-3 at the No. 4 and No. 5 spots, respectively, while Cullen dropped her match, 8-0, to Harrison at the number six position.

The men's team will return to action this weekend with matches against Fairmont State University on Saturday, Mar. 24 at 1 p.m. and Shepherd University on Sunday, Mar. 25 at 10 a.m. The women's team will play again on Friday, Mar. 30 at 3 p.m. against Salem International University at home with first serve scheduled for 2 p.m.
