UVa-Wise Fall to Lees-McRae on the Road, 3-1

BANNER ELK, N. C. - - UVa-Wise fell on the road to Lees-McRae College, 3-1 (22-25, 25-18, 29-27, 25-13), Tuesday night.

Sophomore Madelyn Lawrence led UVa-Wise (4-15) with 10 kills, followed by senior Kyra Jessee and freshman Matelyn Gibson who each posted nine kills. Sophomore Makayla Ledford had 42 assists on the night with 16 digs while junior Morgan Milligan also posted 16 digs.

After trailing to start the first set, UVa-Wise came back to tie the set10-10, but a 5-1 run by the Bobcats (5-16) would put Lees-McRae ahead, 15-11, as the Cavaliers called a timeout. The two teams would continue to exchange leads before UVa-Wise took a 23-22 lead on a service ace by Lawrence. A kill by sophomore Brooke Abbott followed by a Bobcats attack error gave the Cavs a 25-22 set one win.

Lees-McRae jumped out to a 12-4 lead early in set two, but UVa-Wise would find a way to cut the deficit to just two points as the Cavs trailed the Bobcats, 13-11. Lees-McRae extended their lead to 18-12 before going on to take the second set, 25-18.

The third set proved to be a battle as the Cavs took a 13-10 lead to start. The Bobcats would use a 5-0 run to pull ahead, but the Cavs would come back to regain the lead, 21-19. The two teams would tie the set four more times before back-to-back attack errors gave the Bobcats a 29-27 win in set three.

Lees-McRae carried their momentum into the fourth set, holding a 12-7 advantage early in the set. The Bobcats would continue to extend their lead, going ahead by double-digits late, 20-10, before Lees-McRae claimed a 25-13 victory in the fourth set.

UVa-Wise will remain on the road as they take on Virginia State University tomorrow with first serve scheduled for 6 p.m.
