PETERSBURG, Va. - - Volleyball dropped its match to Virginia State University, 3-0 (25-19, 25-13, 25-22) Wednesday night on the road.
Sophomore Madelyn Lawrence recorded five kills and hit .308 for the Cavaliers (4-16) while sophomore Brooke Abbott also posted five kills and added four digs. Junior Morgan Milligan led the Cavs in digs with eight followed by junior Briana Kerr who registered seven digs in the match. Sophomore Makayla Ledford tallied 16 assists on the night. Â
The Trojans (16-7) pulled ahead to a 7-1 lead early in the first set. UVa-Wise would cut its deficit to four points on a kill by Brooke Abbott, 21-17, later in the set. Virginia State would maintain its lead as they went on to claim a 25-19 victory in set one.
After trailing early in the second set, UVa-Wise came back to get within three points on a service error by the Trojans, 13-10. Virginia State would dominate set two with a .440 hitting percentage and a 25-13 win to take a 2-0 lead heading into the third set.
The Cavaliers fought back in the third set tying the match at 14-14. Virginia State would go on a 4-0 run to claim an 18-14 lead but UVa-Wise would climb back with a kill by Kelsey Green followed by a Trojan attack error to put the Cavs down by just one, 23-22, late in the set. Coming out of a Virginia State timeout, the Trojans would win back-to-back points in a close 25-22 set three win.
 UVa-Wise recorded 18 kills and 28 digs while Virginia State posted 39 kills and 37 digs in the Trojans win.
The Cavaliers will host a pair of matches this weekend with Fairmont State up first for a 7 p.m. match on Friday night.
