WHEELING, W. Va. - - Volleyball fell in its match against the No. 18 Wheeling Jesuit Cardinals Friday night, 3-0 (25-13, 25-19, 25-18).
UVa-Wise (5-20, 2-9 MEC) was led by sophomore Brooke Abbott who posted seven kills and a .333 hitting percentage. Fellow sophomore Madelyn Lawrence and freshman Kelsey Green each posted six kills apiece while sophomore Makayla Ledford notched 23 of the Cavaliers 25 assists. Junior Morgan Milligan led the team in digs with 16 followed by Green and senior Kyra Jessee who each recorded seven digs.
The Cardinals (26-3, 12-0 MEC) jumped out to a 5-1 lead to start the first set. A kill by Green followed by a Cardinal attack error would put the Cavs down three points, 9-6. Lawrence and Ledford would cut a three-point run by the Cardinals on a block as Wheeling Jesuit held a 12-7 advantage. The Cardinals continued to extend their lead with a double-digit advantage over UVa-Wise, 20-10. Wheeling Jesuit would go on to take the first set, 25-13.
UVa-Wise would pick up the tempo in the second set, tying the set at 9-9 early on an attack error by the Cardinals. Wheeling Jesuit would take a 14-10 lead before the Cavs came from behind to get within two points, 18-16. Coming out of a UVa-Wise timeout later in the set, Ledford would get a kill to put the Cavs down, 21-17. The Cavs continued to battle as the Cardinals went on to win the set, 25-19, to take a 2-0 lead heading into the third set.
UVa-Wise and Wheeling Jesuit would knot the match early at 8-8 before the Cardinals pulled ahead to a 12-9 lead on a kill. Wheeling Jesuit's momentum did not let up as the Cardinals took a 20-13 advantage before posting a 25-18 set three win and a 3-0 victory in the match.
The Cavs registered 26 kills and 35 digs with five blocks. Wheeling Jesuit tallied 54 kills with 52 assists and 63 digs while hitting .330 on the night.
UVa-Wise will return to action tomorrow with a pair of matches in West Liberty, W. Va. At 11 a.m., the Cavs will finish a previously suspended match against the Notre Dame Falcons. UVa-Wise and West Liberty will follow with first serve scheduled for 1 p.m.
