UVa-Wise Outlasted by Notre Dame Falcons, 3-1

WEST LIBERTY, W. Va. - - Volleyball was outlasted in its match against Notre Dame College, 3-1 (25-23, 23-25, 25-18, 25-17) as play resumed Saturday morning after it was suspended due to floor conditions during the Oct. 6 match. Today's match continued in the third set with Notre Dame leading 21-14. The Falcons (16-13, 8-5 MEC) and Cavaliers (5-21, 2-10 MEC) had tied the match, 1-1, prior to today's continuation.

UVa-Wise was led by sophomore Brooke Abbott who posted 10 kills and five blocks. Sophomore Madelyn Lawrence and freshman Kelsey Green each had nine kills while sophomore Makayla Ledford recorded 33 assists and 13 digs with junior Morgan Milligan adding 28 digs.

Set one was a battle as the two teams traded leads for much of the first set. After trailing, a kill by Ledford and an attack error by Notre Dame put the Cavs ahead, 16-14. Notre Dame would regain the lead later in the set, 23-21, before earning a 25-23 victory in the first set.

Notre Dame pulled ahead to a 7-3 lead in the second set before UVa-Wise used a 4-0 run to tie the game at 7-7. The Cavs and Falcons continued to battle in the second set before Notre Dame took a five-point 17-12 lead over UVa-Wise. Down by one point, the Cavs would tie the set behind an attack error by Notre Dame. UVa-Wise would take back the lead with a kill by Green followed by a Falcons' attack error for a 25-23 set two win for the Cavs.

Momentum would shift in favor of Notre Dame as the Falcons gained a 12-6 advantage early. A kill by the Falcons would give them a 19-10 lead later in the set. Notre Dame continued to maintain its lead as the Falcons went on to take set three, 25-18.

With the Cavs ahead by one point, Notre Dame would win four consecutive points to take an 11-8 lead. UVa-Wise would come from behind to knot the match at 13-13 before the Falcons gained a 21-14 lead on an 8-1 run. Notre Dame would go on to win the set, 25-17, and take the match by a 3-1 decision.

UVa-Wise had 44 kills with eight blocks, 43 assists, and 71 digs. Notre Dame posted 56 kills, 56 assists, and 65 digs in the Falcons' win.

Volleyball will return home for their Senior Night on Tuesday, Oct. 30 against Concord University. The Cavs final home game of the season inside the David J. Prior Convocation Center is scheduled for 7 p.m.
