Volleyball Sweeps Glenville State, 3-0

WISE - - Volleyball swept Glenville State College Saturday afternoon in a 3-0, (25-12, 25-19, 29-17) win over the Pioneers. During the first set, sophomore setter Makayla Ledford notched her 1,000th career assist as she posted a match-high 39 assists in the win.

The Cavaliers (5-19, 2-8 MEC) were led by sophomore Madelyn Lawrence who posted 12 kills and hit .500 while freshman Matelyn Gibson recorded 10 kills. Ledford had 39 of the Cavs 42 assists while freshman Kelsey Green registered 14 digs followed by Ledford and junior Morgan Milligan who each tallied 11 digs in the win.

A kill by Green would win the last point in a 6-1 run for the Cavs to start the first set. UVa-Wise did not let up momentum as they pulled ahead 17-10 heading into a Glenville State (5-14, 1-10 MEC) timeout. The Cavs would close out the set winning the final six points to earn a 25-12 set one win.

UVa-Wise would utilize another run to start the second set, leading the Pioneers 9-3 early. Glenville State would fight its way back, down two points, 13-11, later in the set. Back-to-back blocks by Ledford and Lawrence would give the Cavs a 20-14 advantage over the Pioneers. UVa-Wise would take a timeout, still leading 23-19 late in the set, before taking the second set, 25-19.

Set three was a battle for the two teams as Glenville State climbed back after trailing early. Ahead by just two points, 14-12, UVa-Wise managed to extend its lead to 19-14 as the Pioneers called a timeout. Glenville would come from behind to knot the set at 21-21 before back-to-back attack errors by the Cavs gave the Pioneers a two-point advantage, 23-21.  A kill by sophomore Brooke Abbott followed by another kill by Gibson would tie the game once again at 23 apiece. The two teams continued to trade points, tying the set four more times before consecutive kills by Lawrence and Ledford gave the Cavs a hard-fought 29-27 win in the third set.

UVa-Wise posted eight team blocks alongside 45 kills and 53 digs in the win. Glenville State had 35 kills, 33 assists, and 48 digs on the day.

The Cavs will return to action on Friday as they take on the Cardinals of Wheeling Jesuit on the road. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
