Cavs Fall to the Bobcats, 3-0

WISE - - Volleyball dropped its match against West Virginia Wesleyan Friday night, 3-0 (25-18, 25-17, 25-20).

Sophomore Madelyn Lawrence and freshman Kelsey Green led the Cavaliers (4-19, 1-8 MEC) with eight kills apiece while Lawrence hit .500 in the match. Sophomore setter Makayla Ledford had 26 assists on the night and added 10 digs while junior Morgan Milligan posted a team-high 18 digs in the loss.

A kill by sophomore Brooke Abbott would tie the set early, 8-8, before West Virginia Wesleyan (5-16, 4-6 MEC) took the lead and pulled ahead to a 15-10 advantage. Freshman Matelyn Gibson's kill would get the Cavs within two points later in the set, 16-14, but the Bobcats would continue to extend their lead as West Virginia Wesleyan took set one, 25-18.

Down 4-0 to start, UVa-Wise would go on a 5-0 run with a kill by Lawrence giving the Cavs a 5-4 lead. The two teams would tie five times before the Bobcats claimed a 13-9 lead heading into a UVa-Wise timeout. The Cavs would stay within reach, trailing by just three points later in the set. The Bobcats would maintain their lead as West Virginia Wesleyan earned a 25-17 win in the second set.

UVa-Wise would take the lead early to start the third set, ahead 8-4 over the Bobcats. Lawrence would give the Cavs a one-point advantage later in the set, 14-13, but West Virginia Wesleyan would utilize a 5-1 run to take an 18-15 lead. UVa-Wise would continue to battle as West Virginia Wesleyan closed out the set with a kill for a 25-20 set three win for the Bobcats.

The Cavs registered 29 kills, 26 assists, and 54 digs while the Bobcats tallied 47 kills, 41 assists, and 57 digs in West Virginia Wesleyan's win.

UVa-Wise will be back tomorrow for an 11 a.m. match against Glenville State College inside the David J. Prior Convocation Center.
