Shepherd Tops Cavaliers, 3-0

WISE - - Volleyball was outlasted in three sets by Shepherd University Saturday afternoon, 3-0 (25-15, 25-14, 25-11), inside the David J. Prior Convocation Center.

Senior Kyra Jessee posted a team-high six kills followed by freshmen Kelsey Green and Matelyn Gibson who both had five kills in the loss. Sophomore Makayla Ledford notched 20 assists while junior Morgan Milligan recorded 12 digs.

Trailing early in the first set, UVa-Wise (4-18, 1-7 MEC) would utilize back-to-back kills by Jessee and Lawrence to post a 7-6 lead over the Rams. Shepherd (18-5, 7-2 MEC) would capitalize off of a series of Cavalier errors to take a 15-9 lead over UVa-Wise. The Rams would continue to extend their lead, going on a 4-1 run to close out the first set with a 25-15 win.

The Rams would pull ahead 8-5 in set two on a kill as Shepherd continued to separate themselves from the Cavs with a 4-0 run to take a 12-7 advantage. A kill by Green would stop a sequence of service aces for the Rams, with the Cavs down, 14-8. Shepherd would take a 20-12 lead heading into a UVa-Wise timeout, before the Rams would go on to earn a 25-14 second set victory.

The Cavs would try to shift momentum as the teams opened the third set, but the Rams would jump out to a 15-6 lead to start the set. A 6-0 run for Shepherd would push them ahead 22-9 late in the set as the Rams would tack on their last three points in order to get the 25-11 set three win, and a final 3-0 decision for the Rams.

Up next, UVa-Wise will host West Virginia Wesleyan on Friday, Oct. 19 at 7 p.m. inside the David J. Prior Convocation Center.
