Storylines – vs Wheeling jesuit University
Wheeling Jesuit saw its two game winning streak snapped Thursday when the team dropped a 71-70 decision at Concord. In the loss, the Cardinals were unable to hold a two point lead as the Mountain Lions scored the game's final three points, including the game-winning free throw with five seconds to play. Wheeling Jesuit struggled from the 3-point line in the game as Debbie Buff's squad made just 7-of-25 long range shots. Guard Monica Burns continued to be the team's leader as she netted 29 points without committing a turnover as the redshirt junior played all 40 minutes in the game. This season, the Cardinals have used Burns' 18.1 points per game and the team's strong free throw shooting to stay in the thick of the Mountain East Conference standings. Entering Saturday, Wheeling Jesuit is shooting 79.8 percent from the free throw line. Burns has been the best free throw shooter in the country this year as her 94.8 free throw percentage leads all of NCAA Division II. Burns forms just one third of what has developed into a formidable threesome for the Cardinals. Guard Mariah Callen and forward Chenelle Moore are averaging 14.5 points per game. Combined, the trio averages 47.1 of the team's 70.2 points per game. A year ago, Wheeling Jesuit knocked UVa-Wise out of the MEC Tournament in the league semifinals. The Cardinals are the only team in the MEC the Cavaliers have yet to beat since the league was formed.
Turnovers and poor free throw shooting continue to spell trouble for UVa-Wise. Thursday, the Cavs turned the ball over 22 times and shot just 57.1 percent from the stripe. The lone UVa-Wise player to reach double figure scoring was freshman Bianca Lockamy who netted 11 points thanks to five made free throws. A positive in the game was the team's work on the offensive glass. Elise Clyburn's team grabbed 19 offensive rebounds and converted the second chances into 13 points. Fatigue shouldn't be an issue against Wheeling Jesuit. Lockamy was the only UVa-Wise player to play more than 30 minutes Saturday as Clyburn played all 13 players on the roster with 12 of the players registering at least six minutes. A win Saturday would give the Cavs their first win since Dec. 6 when the team knocked off West Virginia Wesleyan. Time is running out for UVa-Wise to make its move up the league standings. Only 10 of the conference's 12 teams will make the league tournament; to date, the Cavs are two games back of the final tournament berth.
