UVa-Wise Drops Match to West Virginia Wesleyan, 3-1

WISE - - UVa-Wise volleyball dropped a tough fought match to West Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday. The Cavs (4-8) fell 3-1 (21-25, 26-24, 25-23, 25-21) to the Lady Bobcats (4-10) and are now 1-1 in the Mountain East Conference.

After winning the first set, the Cavaliers were unable to gain another set win in the match. The Cavs posted 46 kills and 40 assists in the match but were outlasted by West Virginia Wesleyan's 58 kills and 48 assists. UVa-Wise toggled the lead with the Lady Bobcats for much of the first set, but the Cavs were able to break away to a 15-10 lead. The Cavaliers prevailed over the Lady Bobcats as UVa-Wise won the first set, 25-21.

The Cavs started the second set ahead of Wesleyan as they went on a 4-0 run to take an 11-6 lead. The Lady Bobcats managed to come back to take a 21-20 lead following a number of attack errors by the Cavs. Both teams continued to score back and forth, forcing the Cavaliers to take a timeout late in the set. Wesleyan won the final point of the second set and sealed the win by a score of 26-24.

UVa-Wise maintained the lead throughout the third set ahead of the Lady Bobcats 20-16 late in the set, but errors forced the Cavs the lead as Wesleyan got within two points, 21-19, causing the Cavaliers to take a timeout. The Lady Bobcats won four more points coming out of the timeout as they took the lead, 23-21. The Cavs continued to battle through the set and managed to cut the Lady Bobcats lead to just one point, 24-23, but would fall short as Wesleyan earned the victory, 25-23, in the third set. UVa-Wise was unable to regain control of the match as they trailed for the majority of the fourth set. The Cavaliers forced 50 attack errors by the Lady Bobcats, but were unable to outlast Wesleyan as the Lady Bobcats won the match, 25-21.

Sophomore Morgan Milligan registered a double-double in the match as she logged 31 assists and 12 digs. Junior Ciara Kain led the Cavs in kills as she collected 19 and managed another Cavalier double-double as she added 16 digs in the match. Junior Eustaica Smith posted 13 kills while fellow junior Kyra Jessee and senior Samantha Edge both registered double-digit digs with 15 and 10, respectively.

Cavalier volleyball will play at home at the Prior Center on Tuesday, Sept. 26 as they take on King University at 7 p.m.
