Box Score WISE - - Cavalier volleyball was outlasted by King University on Tuesday, 3-0 (25-14, 25-18, 25-21). The Cavs (4-9, 1-1 MEC) managed 24 assists and 41 digs in the loss.
UVa-Wise posted just five kills in the first set as they forced 29 attack errors by the Tornado. The Cavs were down early, 14-8, and were forced to take the Cavaliers first timeout of the set. UVa-Wise was able to win three unanswered points later in the set to cut King's lead, 18-12. The Tornado proved too strong for the Cavaliers in the first set as King earned a 25-14 victory over the Cavs.
King University went on an early 4-0 run to take a 5-1 lead to start the second set. The Cavs cut the lead, 12-10, but were unable to keep up with the Tornado as King took the set, 25-18. The Cavaliers were able to hold King to an attack percentage of .094 in the second set while UVa-Wise posted 14 digs and nine kills in the set.
The Cavaliers came out strong early in the third set as UVa-Wise took a 7-3 lead. The Tornado managed to come back and tie the set at 10-10 and won two more points in the set before a Cavalier timeout. The Cavs continued to toggle the lead with King before the Tornado went on a 4-0 run giving them a 19-16 lead over the Cavaliers. UVa-Wise put up a strong fight to end the set, but were outlasted by King University, 25-21.
Sophomore Morgan Milligan and freshman Makayla Ledford led the Cavaliers in assists, posting 13 and 10, respectively. Sophomore Briana Kerr registered 10 digs in the contest while junior Ciara Kain recorded nine digs and nine kills in the match.
UVa-Wise will return to action on Friday, Sept. 29, as they travel to Institute, W. Va. to take on West Virginia State University. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
