WISE - - UVa-Wise volleyball opened up conference play with a 3-1 (25-12, 23-25, 25-20, 25-20) win over Glenville State College on Friday. The Cavs posted 47 kills and 79 digs in the win over the Lady Pioneers.
UVa-Wise was dominate in the first set as they registered 20 digs and five team blocks. The Cavs forced 45 attack errors by the Lady Pioneers as they took the first set, 25-12. In a tight second set, the Cavaliers opened on a 5-0 run. Glenville would chip away at the lead and was able to get within two points, 18-16, forcing the Cavs to take a timeout. The Lady Pioneers tied up the match, 20-20, before Glenville State would win the second set, 25-23.
After a 3-3 tie early in the third set, UVa-Wise took the lead and was able to stay ahead for the entirety of the set. The Cavaliers recorded a .265 attack percentage as they held Glenville State to an attack percentage of .044 in the set and forced another 45 attack errors by the Pioneers. The Cavs were able to hold off Glenville State as the Cavs won the third set, 25-20. UVa-Wise entered the fourth set taking an early 9-6 lead before a Glenville State timeout. The Cavs maintained their rhythm as they went on a 4-0 run to take a 22-16 lead, forcing the Lady Pioneers to take another timeout. UVa-Wise would end the match scoring three unanswered points as they won the final set, 25-20.
Junior Ciara Kain led the Cavaliers in kills as she posted 13, followed by freshman Brooke Abbott and junior Eustaica Smith who recorded 11 kills apiece. Sophomore Morgan Milligan posted a double-double in the match as the logged 38 assists and 15 digs. Sophomore Briana Kerr posted the most digs in the match with 24, while Kain added 15 digs and senior Samantha Edge tallied 11 digs in the win.
Cavalier volleyball will play again tomorrow at home as they take on West Virginia Wesleyan College at 11 a.m.
