Cavalier Volleyball Falls to Lees-McRae

BANNER ELK N.C. – Cavalier volleyball dropped their match to Lees-McRae College on Wednesday, 3-0 (25-19, 25-19, 25-14). The Cavs registered just 22 kills and 20 assists in the match.

UVa-Wise opened up the match down early, 4-0, in the first set. Lees-McRae gained momentum as they took a 10-4 lead before a timeout by the Cavs. The Cavaliers came out of the timeout and scored four unanswered points and managed to get within two points of the Bobcats, 10-8. UVa-Wise began to get in a rhythm as they went on a 6-0 run in the set to take the lead, 15-12. The Cavs only scored four more points before the Bobcats managed to come back and win the first set, 25-19.

The Cavaliers were able to stay within striking distance much of the second set only down by two early in the set, 9-7. Lees-McRae started to break away from the Cavs as the Bobcats scored four unanswered points, giving them a five point lead, 18-13. The Cavs continued to battle, but the Bobcats would earn the victory in the second set, 25-19.

The Cavs were not able to regain control going into the third set as they fell behind early, 10-4, forcing UVa-Wise to take their first timeout of the set. Lees-McRae continued to dominate as they took an 18-10 lead over the Cavs. Following a 4-0 run later in the set, the Bobcats would take the third set by a score of 25-14.

Junior Ciara Kain led the Cavs in kills with eight, while freshman Madelyn Lawrence added five kills for the Cavaliers. Sophomore Morgan Milligan tallied 12 assists and six digs in the loss. Sophomore Briana Kerr recorded the most digs for UVa-Wise logging eight digs in the match.

UVa-Wise volleyball will return home to face Glenville State College on Friday, Sept. 22 at 7 p.m. The Cavaliers will play again on Saturday as they take on West Virginia Wesleyan at 11 a.m.
