Box Score WISE – Men's tennis topped Maryville College, 7-2, on Sunday afternoon. The Cavs managed to sweep the Scots in doubles in the victory.
The dominant senior duo of Andrii Rutnytskyi and Viktor Tunnikov prevailed in a tough battle at the No. 1 doubles spot. The pair defeated Maryville's Daniel Silva and Marcos Escudero, 9-8 (7-2). Senior Chris Armistead and junior Ethan Herron matched up against the Scots' Trevor Perry and Cole Stinson as they earned another doubles victory at the No. 2 position for the Cavs by a score of 8-1. At the No. 3 spot, freshman Coleton Burke and sophomore John Hamilton outlasted Mateus Coling and Mason Denman of Maryville College, 8-4.
Rutnytskyi managed to win games in both sets at the No. 1 singles position, but was defeated by the Scots' Silva, 6-3, 6-4. Tunnikov was unable to get the win at the No. 2 spot as he dropped the match, 6-2, 6-3, to Maryville's Escudero. At No. 3, Armistead triumphed over the Scots' Coling as he earned a 6-0, 6-1 victory. Herron was able to get the win at the No. 4 position as he topped Perry of Maryville, 6-3, 6-2 while Burke bested Maryville's Stinson at the No. 5 spot, 6-3, 6-2. Hamilton rounded out singles play for men's tennis, earning a 6-3, 6-3 victory over the Scots' Denman.
The Cavs will return to action on Saturday, Oct. 7, as they travel to Montreat, N.C. to match up against Montreat College. First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m.
