WISE – UVa-Wise men's tennis was swept, 9-0, Saturday afternoon as they faced Southern Virginia University.

The Cavs faced a tough Southern Virginia team as seniors Andrii Rutnytskyi and Viktor Tunnikov opened doubles play at the No. 1 position with an 8-1 loss to Thomas Snelson and Tanner O'Brien of Southern Virginia University. Senior Chris Armistead and junior Ethan Herron put up a fight at the No. 2 spot as they were defeated in a close 9-7 decision by the Knights Paul Monson and Zachery Bowers. At the No. 3 doubles position, freshman Coleton Burke and sophomore John Hamilton were unable to come away with a win as they fell to Southern Virginia's Ben Spencer and Gary George, 8-1.

UVa-Wise was blanked in doubles as Rutnytskyi dropped his match at the No. 1 position to the Knights Monson, 6-1, 6-0. Tunnikov was swept at the No. 2 spot, 6-0, 6-0, defeated by Spencer of Southern Virginia. Armistead was able to win one game in his first set and two games in his second set before falling to Southern Virginia University's Snelson at the No. 3 spot. The Knights O'Brien handed Herron a 6-2, 6-1 loss at No. 4. Burke managed to win three games in the second set at the No. 5 position, but was outlasted by Southern Virginia's Andrew Blonquist, 6-0, 6-3. Rounding out doubles, Hamilton was swept at the No. 6 spot, 6-0, 6-0, by the Knights Bowers.

Men's tennis will return to action tomorrow as they take on Maryville College at noon at the Jim and Betty Humphreys Tennis Complex.
