Cedarville University Tops Men’s Tennis 8-1 Saturday

CEDARVILLE, Ohio – The UVa-Wise men's tennis team was stung 8-1 by the Yellow Jackets of Cedarville University Saturday afternoon in a non-conference road match in Cedarville, Ohio. The Cavaliers (4-13) were swept in doubles play and came away with just one singles win on the afternoon, courtesy of junior Christopher Armistead (Virginia Beach, Va.).

The Yellow Jackets (9-10) handled UVa-Wise in three convincing doubles matches, picking up a 8-0 win at the third spot when Alex Totten and Stephen Combs took down freshmen Daniel Laughlin (Bristol, Va.) and John Hamilton (Wise, Va.). At the top doubles position, the junior duo of Andrii Rutnytskyi (Odessa, Ukraine) and Viktor Tunnikov (Kharkiv, Ukraine) were handed a 8-2 loss by Matt Brumbaugh and Jonathan Class of Cedarville. The most competitive doubles contest came at No. 2 doubles where Armistead and freshman Josh McFadden (Newport News, Va.) were defeated 8-4 by the Yellow Jackets' Ryan Shomo and Joel Clark.

Armistead was the Cavs' lone bright spot in singles play as he won his team-best 11th match of the season and ninth at No. 3 singles. The junior took the first set 7-5 against Cedarville's Shomo, before falling 6-1 in the second and then claiming the third set super tiebreak by a narrow margin of 10-8. Armistead has now won four consecutive singles matches and six of his last seven.

McFadden took six games off his opponent at No. 4 singles but fell 6-4, 6-2 against the Yellow Jackets' Clark. Rutnytskyi, Tunnikov and Laughlin were only able to win two games in each of their matches. Brumbaugh of Cedarville defeated Rutnytskyi 6-2, 6-0 at the top singles spot, while the Yellow Jackets' Totten bested Tunnikov 6-0, 6-2 at second singles. Cedarville's Jeremy Hoover topped Laughlin 6-1, 6-1 at No. 5 singles.

The Yellow Jackets' Combs earned a 6-0, 6-0 shutout win at the sixth singles position over Hamilton.

The Cavs continue their four-match road trip tomorrow with a 10 a.m. Mountain East Conference match at West Liberty University in the northern panhandle West Virginia.
