Cavs and Pioneers Split Doubleheader

GLENVILLE, W.Va. - - Host Glenville State and UVa-Wise split a Mountain East Conference baseball doubleheader at the Sue Morris Sports Complex Saturday afternoon. The visiting Cavaliers took game one 4-3 to improve to 8-0 in one-run games before the Pioneers scored a 7-4 victory in the finale.

UVa-Wise (13-19, 7-7 MEC) got on the board first in the opener when Trevor Nevill belted a solo homerun down the right field line in the top of the second inning. The homerun was the first of the freshman's career.

Glenville State (8-18, 5-9 MEC) took the lead with a three-run third inning. Zach Sanford got the scoring going when he drove home John Peloro. Later in the inning, Sanford swiped second and Tanner Helms raced home on the throw to give the Pioneers a 2-1 advantage. The third run of the frame came when Sanford came home on an error by the Cavs.

The score would remain unchanged until the fifth as UVa-Wise starter Nathan Hatmaker and Glenville State starter Brady Wilkinson matched zeros.

The Cavs got within a run when freshman Nate Thompson singled home Josh Haga.

An inning later, UVa-Wise took the lead on a run-scoring infield single by Jordan Turner and a sacrifice fly by sophomore David Thomas.

Hatmaker would get the first two outs of the seventh inning before a walk sent the winning run to the plate. Sophomore Dylan Luttrell would enter the game and after allowing a double would get a fly ball to left field to preserve the 4-3 victory.

Thompson and Tyler Blaun had two hits each to lead a seven-hit attack for the Cavs.

Hatmaker improved his record to 4-5 by tossing 6 2/3 innings of five-hit baseball. The left-hander allowed three runs (two earned) while striking out two and walking five.

Sanford finished with three of the Pioneers' six hits.

In game two, junior Stuart Paz gave UVa-Wise a 1-0 lead in the first inning when his sacrifice fly plated David Thomas.

The lead would be short lived as Glenville State answered with a pair of runs in the home half of the second inning as Sanford belted a solo homer and a RBI groundout from Jordan Braniff.

Thompson would tie the game in the top of the third when he knocked in Turner with a sacrifice fly.

Glenville State responded as Zach Bacon and Jordan Braniff each had an RBI in the home fourth to make the score 4-2.

The back-and-forth contest continued as Hank Banner's squad scored a pair of runs in the fifth as Blaum scored on the back end of a double steal to make it a 4-3 contest. Later in the frame Paz lifted his second sacrifice fly of the inning to tie the game at 4-4.

Sanford broke the tie in the sixth with his second homerun of the game, a solo shot down the right field line to make it a 5-4 game.

At that point, Wesley Stauffer entered out of the bullpen and took command of the contest. The right-hander allowed just one hit in four innings of work while striking out five and walking two.

The Pioneers tacked on two more runs to make the final score 7-4.

The same two teams will complete their series tomorrow at 1 p.m. with a doubleheader.
