GLENVILLE, W.Va. - - Host Glenville State College used a pair of position players turned pitchers to silence the UVa-Wise bats in a doubleheader sweep at the Sue Morris Sports Complex Sunday. First baseman Zach Sanford fired 5 2/3 innings of two-run ball in a 7-2 Pioneers' triumph in the opener before right fielder Tanner Helms fired a nine inning complete game shutout in a 2-0 win in the finale.
Helms got the scoring started in game one when he doubled home Sanford to give Glenville State (10-18, 7-9 MEC) a 1-0 lead in the home second.
An inning later, the Pioneers effectively put the game out of reach with a four-run frame. Kyle Johnston lined a run-scoring hit while a wild pitch, an error and a Bryan Baylis RBI groundout to account for the quartet of runs.
UVa-Wise (13-21, 7-9 MEC) got within three runs thanks to a sacrifice fly from redshirt freshman Josh Haga and a RBI groundout by sophomore David Thomas in the fifth inning.
Glenville State answered with two runs of their own in the fifth inning as Sanford and Helms each had a run-producing hit to aid the team to the 7-2 win.
Logan Henderson joined Helms, Sanford and Johnston with two hits each in the win. As a team, the Pioneers lined 11 hits off a trio of Cavalier hurlers.
Freshman Joey Skov led UVa-Wise with three hits in the loss, the three hits were a career-high for the shortstop.
Game two saw junior left-hander Joe Catalani lock horns with Helms. Neither pitcher blinked until the sixth when the Pioneers' John Peloro launched a two-run homer to left-center for the only runs of the contest.
Catalani was the tough-luck loser as he scattered six hits without allowing a walk in six innings of work. The Front Royal, Va. native added five strikeouts in defeat.
Helms kept UVa-Wise hitters off balance throughout the game by using his fastball. Helms allowed seven hits while walking two to improve to 3-3 on the year.
Junior Stuart Paz led the Cavaliers with two hits; the doubleheader sweep propelled the Pioneers to a 3-1 win the four-game set.
Hank Banner's club returns to play next Friday at West Virginia State when the team kicks off a four game league series.
