WISE - - Freshman Nate Thompson fired four innings of no-hit relief to aid UVa-Wise to an 8-7 win over visiting Fairmont State in game two of a doubleheader at Stallard Field Sunday afternoon. The Fighting Falcons doubled up the Cavaliers 12-6 in the opener as the two teams split the Mountain East Conference twin bill.
UVa-Wise (12-17, 6-6 MEC) took the lead for good in game two when freshman shortstop Jordan Turner doubled home Dante Salerno and Cal Bailey to give the hosts a 7-6 lead in the fifth inning.
An inning later, Hank Banner's crew would add an insurance run when freshman Dawson Cagle singled home redshirt freshman Trevor Nevill.
The score would remain 8-6 until the eighth inning when Fairmont State scored an unearned run on a Johnny Kesling RBI groundout.
Fairmont State would have a chance in the ninth inning when Ted Sova reached first on a bad hop and moved to second on an error. He would get within 90 feet of tying the game when he moved to third base on a wild pitch. Thompson would strand Sova at third when he ended the game with his third strikeout.
The win improved UVa-Wise to 7-0 in one run games, including a 5-0 mark at home in such contests.
Nevill finished the game 4-5 at the plate with an RBI and a pair of runs scored. Cagle, Tyler Blaum, Josh Haga and Salerno added two hits each to lead a 13-hit effort for the Cavaliers.
UVa-Wise jumped out to an early 5-0 lead behind a two RBI single from Cagle a run-scoring infield hit by Blaum, a RBI hit by Haga and a run-producing by double by Nevill in the opening two frames.
Fairmont State was able to come back in large part due to the play of centerfielder Austin Norman. Norman belted a three-run homerun as part of a 3-4 day at the plate that saw the outfielder score three times and knock in four.
Freshman Greg Duncan picked up the mound victory. The right-hander allowed six runs on eight hits while striking out two to improve to 2-1 on the year.
Thompson did not allow a walk or a hit in collecting his second save of 2017. The Wise, Va. native has now tossed 10 1/3 innings this season without allowing an earned run.
In game one, the Fighting Falcons used a six-run second inning to break a 2-2 tie to take a lead they would not relinquish.
Sophomore David Thomas provided some offensive highlights for the Cavs. The designated hitter belted a solo homer as part of a 2-4 game that included a double, two RBI and a pair of runs scored. Thompson added two hits to join Thomas as the only UVa-Wise players to finish with multiple hits in the opener.
Michael Stout earned the mound win for Fairmont State. The left-hander fired 5 2/3 innings of six-run ball (five earned) while striking out five.
Tyler Holt picked up the save as he entered the game with the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning with his team leading 9-5. After uncorking a wild pitch, Stout got out of the jam.
After his team tacked on three runs in the top of the seventh, Stout turned in a 1-2-3 seventh to record the save.
Fairmont State lined 16 hits in the victory, Norman and Kessling had three hits each to lead the way.
UVa-Wise will return to play Saturday at Glenville State College when the team begins MEC Southern Division play with a four-game set.
