Cavs Split with Cardinals, Claim Fifth One-Run Victory

WHEELING, W.Va. - - UVa-Wise's streak of winning one-run games continued Friday afternoon as the Cavaliers earned a doubleheader split against host Wheeling Jesuit University. Wheeling Jesuit claimed a 3-1 win in the opener before a David Thomas sacrifice fly in the top of the ninth scored Nate Thompson for the game-winning run in a 6-5 UVa-Wise victory in the finale.

UVa-Wise (11-13, 5-1 MEC) has now posted five one-run wins against Mountain East Conference competition. While Thomas' sacrifice fly helped decide the finale, the Cavs took command of the game in the third frame.

Thomas had an RBI single in the inning before junior Stuart Paz had a bases clearing double that plated three runs to give the guests a 4-0 lead.

Freshman Greg Duncan would keep the Cardinals scoreless over six innings of work. The right-hander allowed just two hits in the start and finished his outing by shutting down a Wheeling Jesuit rally.

With men on the corners and nobody out, the Centreville, Va. product struck out Dalton Davis before getting Dillon Sunnafrank to ground into an inning ending 6-4-3 double play.

The Cavs added a fifth run in the top of the seventh when Thomas drove in Thompson on a 3-1 pitch.

Wheeling Jesuit would mount a comeback in the home half of the eighth as an error and a three-run homer by Sunnafrank tied the contest.

In the ninth, Thompson singled to lead off the inning and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by freshman Dante Salerno. After back-to-back walks, Thomas lifted his sacrifice fly to right field allowing Thompson to scamper home.

Immediately upon entering the dugout, Thompson raced to the bullpen to warmup. The Wise, Va. native entered the game in the bottom of the ninth and retired the Cardinals to earn the save.

In addition to his save, Thompson added a pair of doubles and two runs scored to his three-hit game. Thomas finished 3-4 with three RBI while freshman Josh Haga went 2-3.

In the opener, Wheeling Jesuit used back-to-back doubles from Adam Dennison and Logan Shickler to plate three runs in the second inning to take a 3-1 lead.

Cardinals' starter Michael Finch would make the runs hold as he scattered four hits and struck out three in a complete game effort.

UVa-Wise will be back in action tomorrow at West Liberty University for a MEC doubleheader. Game one is slated to begin at 1 p.m.
