Cavs Unable to Crack 'Toppers Pitching in Doubleheader Loss

WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. - - Host West Liberty University used a complete game shutout performance from Greg Stagani to win game one 6-0 before Yale Hughes hurled eight innings of two run ball in a 6-2 triumph in the finale as the Hilltoppers swept a Mountain East Conference doubleheader from UVa-Wise Saturday afternoon.

West Liberty got on the board in the home half of the first inning when Ethan Estes scored on a Michael Adams run-scoring single.

The 'Toppers plated two more runs in the third when Adams knocked in Justice Jackson and Coby Eckstein singled home Nolan Marcus.

That would be all the run support Stagani would need as the senior struck out eight and scattered two hits in the complete game shutout.

Nolan Marcus put the game out of reach when he had a three-RBI double in the fourth to provide the 6-0 final margin.

Freshman Jordan Turner and junior Stuart Paz picked up the two hits in the loss for the Cavaliers.

Marcus, Adams and Jackson had two hits each to lead a seven-hit effort for West Liberty.

Game two saw redshirt Freshman Trevor Nevill match Hughes zero-for-zero on the scoreboard until the fourth when Eckstein singled in Marcus to give West Liberty a 1-0 advantage.

An inning later, the 'Toppers scored three runs, two of which came on a two-RBI double from Adams to push the lead to 4-0.

David Thomas ended a no-hit threat and put the Cavs on the board with an RBI single in the sixth to score Turner.

In the home half of the frame, a two-run double by Estes made the score 6-1 going to the seventh inning.

Freshman Mathew Branham would blast a solo homerun in the eighth inning for UVa-Wise but it would be as close as the visitors would get as West Liberty claimed the 6-2 win.

Thomas picked up two of UVa-Wise's four hits in the loss.

The Cavs will be off until Friday when the team travels to Shepherd for a doubleheader.
