Strong Pitching Allows Cavs to Split Doubleheader at Southern Wesleyan

CENTRAL, S.C. - - UVa-Wise used the pitching of Nathan Hatmaker, Will Stamper and Alex Dobry to claim a 2-1 extra innings victory over Southern Wesleyan in the opener before the Warriors used a two-RBI double by John Garrett in the fifth inning to post a 5-3 win in the series finale. Garrett's game-winning double allowed Southern Wesleyan to win the series two games to one after the hosts took a nine-inning affair on Friday.

UVa-Wise (4-6) senior left-hander Nathan Hatmaker exhibited good control in the opener as the Harrogate, Tenn. product allowed just one walk in a six-inning outing that saw the hurler allow just three hits. Hatmaker allowed his only run of the game when Garrett knocked in Jason Molden with a sacrifice fly in the third inning to give the Warriors a 1-0 lead.

Southern Wesleyan (2-9) would hold the lead until the seventh inning thanks to the mound work of J.J. Julian and Jarrett Joyn. The duo combined to toss six innings of shutout ball while striking out nine and allowing just four hits.

It would be a defensive mistake that would allow the Cavaliers to tie the game down to their final three outs.

Freshman Jordan Turner led off the frame with a base hit before stealing second base. The Berryville, Va. product would move to third on a passed ball and score when sophomore David Thomas lifted a sacrifice fly to centerfield.

With the game tied, Head Coach Hank Banner turned to freshman right-hander Stamper to force extra innings. The Lebanon, Va. product turned in the best performance of his short collegiate career to this point by striking out five in two innings of hitless ball.

The 1-1 tie would continue through the ninth inning as Dobry would strike out the side to force a 10th frame.

A Defensive miscue would again plague the Warriors as senior Vinny Kuchenbuch would scamper home with what would prove to be the game-winning run on an error.

Dobry returned to the mound in the home 10th and after allowing a base runner induced a game-ending double play to even the series at a game each.

Junior Stuart Paz was the only Cav to have a multi-hit game as he finished 2-5 to lead a seven-hit attack.

Dobry finished with four strikeouts in two innings of work to claim his first victory of 2017. Matthew Roth was the tough-luck loser as he did not allow an earned run in his two innings of action.

Game two saw UVa-Wise jump out to an early 1-0 lead when freshman catcher Tyler Blaum tripled home redshirt freshman Josh Haga in the top of the first.

An inning later, three unearned runs would give Southern Wesleyan a 3-1 lead. DiMarkis San delivered an RBI double in the three-run frame for the Warriors.

UVa-Wise tied the game in the fifth when Kuchenbuch knocked in freshman shortstop Joey Skov to make it a 3-2 game before a passed ball allowed Thomas to tie the game on a passed ball.

The Cavs missed an opportunity to score more in the frame but left a pair of runners on base in the inning.

It would prove costly as UVa-Wise would not get another base runner in the game.

Southern Wesleyan started the sixth inning with a base hit by Molden a walk by Julio Justo and a pair of steals by the base runners. Sophomore Dylan Luttrell was the summoned out the bullpen but after striking out the first batter he face, Garrett lined what would be the game-winning double.

Jordan Finst hurled a perfect seventh frame to collect his first save of the season while Josh Antwine improved to 1-2 on the year by allowing two earned runs in six innings of work.

Only two of the Warriors five runs in the game were earned. Junior Joe Catalani started for the Cavs and allowed five hits in three innings of work. Freshman Greg Duncan pitched a perfect fourth inning in relief before sophomore Kellen Larkin took the loss by surrendering two runs in an inning of work.

Haga led UVa-Wise with two hits while San and Justo had two hits each for Southern Wesleyan.

The Cavs will return to play on Feb. 26 against Tiffin University in the RussMatt Spring Break Invitational in Orlando, Fla.
