CENTRAL, S.C. - - Southern Wesleyan pounded out 15 hits and took advantage of four UVa-Wise errors en route to a 14-3 non-conference victory over UVa-Wise in the series opener Friday. The Warriors' Connor Ewing finished 3-3 with three runs scored and three RBI as the catcher added a two-run homerun as part of his big day.
Ewing's two-run blast put Southern Wesleyan (2-7) ahead 2-0 in the bottom of the second inning before the Warriors ahead a third run in the frame on an error.
UVa-Wise (3-5) never recovered as the guests surrendered an eight-run fourth inning that effectively put the game out of reach.
Southern Wesleyan took advantage of three miscues by UVa-Wise in the inning to take an 11-0 lead.
The Cavs got on the board in the top of the seventh when redshirt freshman Josh Haga plated freshman Tyler Blaum with a sacrifice fly.
The Warriors played add-on in the home eighth as a two-RBI single by Justin Brew highlighted a three-run frame.
Trailing 14-1 going to the ninth inning, senior Nathan Hatmaker plated two runs when he doubled in David Thomas and Noah Lacy to provide the final margin of 14-3.
Thomas was the only Cav to record a multi-hit game as he finished 2-4 with a run scored and a walk. As a team, UVa-Wise lined seven hits , including three doubles as Matthew Branham and Matt Wright joined Hatmaker in the doubles column.
Izzy Martine, Andrew Falgi, Jason Molden and Brew all had two hits each for the Warriors who tallied six extra-base hits in the victory.
Mike Batten earned the win on the mound for Southern Wesleyan by tossing six innings of shutout ball. Batten added eight strikeouts while walking just two and allowing four hits.
Matthew Wilkinson pitched three innings of scoreless relief for UVa-Wise in the loss.
The series concludes with a doubleheader tomorrow at 12 p.m.
