Storylines – vs Notre Dame College
Kate Hine's Notre Dame College Falcons have been finding their groove latley; entering Thursday's home tilt against UVa-Wise, Notre Dame has won four consecutive games. The Falcons are led by one of the league's best players, Kelsey Miller. The 6-foot-2 senior forward ranks third in the league in scoring at 18.2 points per game and third in rebounding at 9.3 rebounds per game. During Notre Dame's current four-game winning streak, Miller is averaging 22.5 points and 9.8 rebounds a game. In her team's most recent victory, Miller scored 31 points and grabbed 11 boards in a 75-64 win at Fairmont State. Miller will need some help if Notre Dame is to knock off UVa-Wise Thursday, the senior scored 23 points on 9-14 shooting in the meeting in Wise but, only one other Falcon cracked double figures as Jessie Stout came off the bench to chip in 10 points. Notre Dame likes to pound the ball inside as evidenced by Miller's stat line and the fact the team makes less than 30 percent of its 3-point field goal attempts this season. Forward Kim Cook (10.7) and guard Seina Adachi (10.1) also average double-figure scoring for Hine's team. Â
About UVa-Wise
To complete a season-series sweep of Notre Dame College, UVa-Wise will have to follow a similar path to its win over the Falcons in Wise earlier this year. In the 73-67 victory,
Kristin Kunzman's team placed five players in double-figure scoring as
Kayla Carey,
Makenzie Cluesman and
Ashley Cullen all netted 14 points. The Cavaliers also limited second chances as Notre Dame grabbed just eight offensive rebounds in the contest. With 18 wins on the season, UVa-Wise stands two victories away from claiming its first 20-win season since the 2005-2006 campaign and just the sixth in school history. The turnaround in the program has been led by the senior trio of
Taylor Sandidge, Carey and Cluesman. Combined the seniors have scored 3,756 points while having made 292 starts entering Thursday. Senior leadership will be pivotal down the stretch as the Cavs play three of the season's final four games away from home. This season, UVa-Wise is 4-6 on the road and is allowing opponents to score 69.5 points and shoot 40.5 percent from the field. By comparison, at home UVa-Wise is 11-1 and is holding opponents to 61.2 points per game and 37.1 percent shooting. All-time the Cavs are 5-3 against the Falcons, the two schools have split the previous four meetings in South Euclid.
