Storylines – vs Millersville
Veteran coach Marry Fleig will have a familiar face at her side when Millersville tips off the 2017-18 season, former player Kristin Kunzman has returned to her alma mater to serve as the program's top assistant. Kunzman spent the last six seasons as the helm of the UVa-Wise program where she guided the Cavaliers to 21 wins a year ago. Picked sixth in the PSAC Eastern Division Preseason Coaches' Poll, Millersville is led by senior Alayah Hall who averaged 13.1 points per game last season. The team should also see a boost in the return of junior Janelle Robinson. Robinson missed most of last season due to injury after starting three games in the early going. Overall, the Maruders return five upperclassmen, including juniors Kendra Bamberger and Jade Farquhar. Bamberger made eight starts and averaged over 22 minutes per game while posting double figure scoring in three of the final four games of the season, a year ago. Farquhar started 15 games and averaged 6.2 points per game.
About UVa-Wise
Interim Head Coach
Elise Clyburn will make her collegiate coaching debut Saturday as her Cavaliers begin play in the PSAC Conference Challenge. Clyburn's team will have a plethora of new faces on the roster as the team will try to replace a trio of 1,000 point scorers in
Taylor Sandidge, Makenzie Cluesman and
Kayla Carey. All three women were lost to graduation off of last year's 21-win club which advanced to the semifinals of the MEC Conference Tournament. Juniors Ashley Cullen, Alle Moore, Adalamaryz Rivera - Gomez and Dakotah Turner along with sophomore Cynita Webb return to anchor the squad. Moore is the team's top returning scorer, as a sophomore the 5-foot-10 forward averaged 6.3 points and 3.9 rebounds per contest while averaging just under 17 minutes per game. Cullen made .333 percent of her 3-point shots while making 17 starts, Webb figures to make her first collegiate start Saturday after averaging 11 minutes per game as a freshman. Meanwhile, Rivera - Gomez played in 31 games as a sophomore and is regarded as one of the faster players in the league and Turner played some of her best ball down the stretch last year as she scored four points and grabbed five rebounds in the season finale. Newcomers to the team include freshman Hanna Oliver, junior college transfer Janice Ladson, freshman Ada Stanley and freshman Bianca Lockamy who all should see significant playing time in the early going. The Cavs will have a quick turnaround, the team will be back in action Sunday at 1 p.m. against Edinboro University.
