Volleyball Falls to the Mountain Lions, 3-1

ATHENS, W.Va. - - Cavalier volleyball was outlasted by Concord University 3-1 (17-25, 28-26, 25-13, 25-22) on Tuesday night. UVa-Wise (6-23, 2-13) posted 64 kills and 83 digs alongside a .211 attack percentage in the match.

UVa-Wise trailed early in the first set but managed to take a 10-8 lead over Concord (13-18, 7-7) later in the set. The Cavs continued to attack going on a 5-0 run to take a 15-8 advantage over the Mountain Lions. UVa-Wise did not let up as the team registered a .389 attack percentage to win the first set, 25-17.

The Cavs and Mountain Lions toggled the lead much of the second set before Concord won three-straight points to take a 21-18 advantage, forcing a Cavalier timeout. UVa-Wise was able to come back and tie the game, 23-23, against Concord. The Cavs continued to rally but would fall short as the Mountain Lions earned two back-to-back points to win the second set, 28-26.

Concord came out strong in the third set with an early 8-4 lead over the Cavs. The Mountain Lions stayed in rhythm, extending the lead 20-12 late in the set. Behind a .368 attack percentage, Concord would win the third set, 25-13.

After trailing 10-5 to start the fourth, the Cavs fought back to tie the set, 15-15. UVa-Wise would gain a two-point advantage over Concord late in the set, taking a 20-18 lead. Concord would regain the lead following a UVa-Wise timeout as the Mountain Lions took the fourth set, 25-22.

Sophomore Briana Kerr led the Cavs in digs with 26 while junior Eustaica Smith had 20 kills for the Cavaliers. Freshman Makayla Ledford was one of three players to record a double-double for the Cavaliers, posting 27 assists and 11 digs. Sophomore Morgan Milligan also registered a double-double with 30 assists and 11 digs while junior Ciara Kain posted 25 kills and 21 digs.

The Cavaliers will wrap up their season as they host the University of Charleston on Friday, Nov. 10, inside the Prior Center. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
