Cavs Swept in Doubleheader

WISE - - UVa-Wise volleyball hosted a double-header against West Liberty and Wheeling Jesuit on Saturday while the Cavaliers also held Senior Day, recognizing senior Samantha Edge. The Cavs (6-22, 2-12) were unable to earn a win on the day as the team was swept in straight sets in both matches.

In their first match of the day, the Cavaliers were outlasted 3-0, (25-18, 25-23, 25-13) by West Liberty. UVa-Wise recorded 35 kills and 26 digs while the Hilltoppers (17-12, 8-7) posted 45 kills and a .272 attack percentage in the match. UVa-Wise and West Liberty exchanged the lead for much of the first set before the Hilltoppers took a 16-12 lead following a 4-0 run by West Liberty. The Hilltoppers would extend the lead to 20-13 before taking the first set, 25-18.

West Liberty took an early 12-9 lead in the second set, but the Cavs managed to tie the game 16-16 later in the set. The Hilltoppers took a two point lead, 22-20, late in the set and would go on to earn a 25-23 victory in a close second set. West Liberty came out strong in the third set as they posted a .355 attack percentage alongside 15 kills. The Hilltoppers went up early and maintained the lead as they closed out the match with a 25-13 victory in the third set.

Sophomore Morgan Milligan posted 22 of the Cavaliers 24 assists as well as seven digs in the match. Junior Ciara Kain recorded 11 kills while junior Eustaica Smith added seven kills on the day. Sophomore Briana Kerr and junior Kyra Jessee both tallied seven digs apiece for the Cavs.

West Liberty's Raimey Benson registered 11 kills while Olivia Baumhoer posted 10 kills in their win. The Hilltoppers' Kendall Souder recorded a double-double with 19 assists and 10 digs.

UVa-Wise fell to Wheeling Jesuit, 3-0 (25-11, 25-11, 25-13) in the Cavaliers final match of the day. Wheeling Jesuit (26-4, 14-0) registered an attack percentage of .448 in the match and tallied 48 kills. The Cardinals were unstoppable to start the match, winning by a score of 25-11 in both the first and second sets.

The Cavaliers took a 4-1 advantage early in the third set, but Wheeling Jesuit was able to cut the lead to tie the game at 5-5. The Cardinals would go on a 5-0 run, forcing a Cavalier timeout. Wheeling Jesuit would win the final set of the day, 25-13.

Kain registered a double-double with 10 kills and 10 digs while freshman Makayla Ledford recorded 12 assists and five digs in the match.

Wheeling Jesuit's Haley Kramer had 13 assists while Cassie Meyer added 11 assists and seven digs. The Cardinals' Stephanie Sylvester recorded 38 assists in the team's win.

The Cavaliers will return to action on Tuesday, Nov. 7, as they take on Concord University for a 7 p.m. road matchup.
