UVa-Wise Looks to Bounce Back in Home Opener Against Carson-Newman


Storylines – vs.Carson-Newman University

Carson-Newman will visit UVa-Wise with an undefeated, 2-0, record to start its 2017-18 campaign. The Eagles defeated Lander, 82-78, on Friday night and topped Southern Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon, 95-68. Carson-Newman senior guard and preseason All-South Atlantic Conference selection Charles Clark led his team in points with 26, giving Clark over 1,700 career points. The Eagles shot 25-for-54 (51.9 percent) against Lander and grabbed 38 rebounds. In Carson-Newman's Saturday afternoon matchup against Southern Wesleyan, the Eagles shot an impressive 36-for-59 (61 percent) from the field with 39 points coming off the bench. Clark led the Eagles in scoring once again with 16 points on the night and added seven assists in the win. Last year, Carson-Newman welcomed UVa-Wise to Jefferson City, Tenn. as the Eagles prevailed in a five point, 96-91, overtime win. Through two games this season, Clark leads the Eagles in scoring and rebounding, averaging 21.0 points and 5.5 rebounds per game. The Eagles finished their 2016-17 campaign with a 19-11 overall record and finished fourth in the SAC. Carson-Newman was picked third in this year's preseason poll, receiving 80 points and one first place vote.

Men's basketball will return to the David J. Prior Convocation Center on Wednesday as the team hosts the Carson-Newman University Eagles in the Cavaliers 2017-18 home opener. UVa-Wise looks to bounce back at home after a slow start to the season following a winless weekend at West Virginia State's Earl Lloyd Classic. Defeated by Elizabeth City State University in day one of the tournament, the Cavaliers were tripped up once again on Saturday afternoon, 79-58, against Johnson C. Smith University. The Golden Bulls shot 28-for-62, hitting 18-of-24 free throws and posted 41 rebounds. Only down eight heading into halftime, the Cavaliers were unable to regain momentum in the second half, shooting 11-for-32 (34.4 percent) from the floor. UVa-Wise made 20-of-58 shots from the field, with just 16 points inside the paint against JCSU. Sophomore point guard Michal Seals led the Cavs with 21 points, shooting 8-of-14 from the floor and 3-of-5 from beyond the arc. Sophomore forward Yesid Mosquera-Perea shot 4-for-8 from the field with nine points and a career-high eight rebounds. This season, Seals leads all Cavs in scoring and assists, averaging 17.5 ppg and 5.5 assists per game. The Cavaliers have shot 39-for-104 (37.5 percent) and recorded 63 rebounds through two games.
