FAIRMONT, W.Va. - - Cavalier volleyball was outlasted by Fairmont State University Friday night, 3-0 (25-14, 25-17, 25-17). UVa-Wise (5-17, 1-7) was held to just 26 kills and 24 assists in the match while the Falcons (15-6, 6-2) registered 50 kills and 50 assists alongside a .285 attack percentage.
Fairmont State started strong with the Falcons going ahead 9-2 early in the first set. The Cavaliers could not gain momentum as the Falcons extended their lead 20-6 before taking the first set, 25-14. The Falcons sustained their rhythm going into the second set as Fairmont State gained a 10-6 advantage over the Cavaliers. UVa-Wise was down 19-10 before the Cavs began to chip away at the Falcons lead to get within five points, 20-15. Fairmont State did not let up, winning three consecutive points to take the second set by a score of 25-17.
UVa-Wise managed to stay within reach to start the third set, only down 11-6 early. The Falcons would pull ahead to take an 18-12 advantage over UVa-Wise, forcing a Cavalier timeout. The Cavs would fall to Fairmont State, 25-17, in the third set as the Falcons won the game.
Sophomore Morgan Milligan posted a double-double for the Cavs with 15 assists and 11 digs. Sophomore Briana Kerr registered the most digs for the Cavaliers with 18 while junior Ciara Kain tallied 12 digs and seven kills in the match. Freshman Makayla Ledford and junior Kyra Jessee both added eight digs for the Cavaliers.
Fairmont State's Mackenzie Harrison recorded a double-double for her team with 19 kills and 10 digs. The Falcons' Emma Mobley added seven kills and 23 assists while Megan Clerico posted 17 digs in Fairmont's win.
UVa-Wise volleyball will return to action tomorrow as they face Shepherd University in another conference road match. First serve is scheduled for 4 p.m.
