WISE - - Volleyball outlasted Lees-McRae College Tuesday night, 3-1 (18-25, 25-23, 25-20, 25-10). The Cavaliers (5-16, 1-6 MEC) were able to rally back from a first set loss to win the next three sets against the Bobcats (3-14, 1-7 CC).
Lees-McRae took an early 11-3 lead over the Cavs to start the first set. The Bobcats would continue to control the set as they extended the lead over the Cavaliers, 20-12. Lees-McRae held UVa-Wise to an attack percentage of just .048 as they won the first set, 25-18.
The Cavaliers attacked early to open up the second set, taking a 10-5 advantage over the Bobcats. Lees-McRae managed to tie the game, 11-11, forcing the Cavaliers to take a timeout. UVa-Wise took a 16-13 lead later in the set, but the Bobcats came from behind to cut the Cavs lead to just one point, 21-20. Back-to-back attack errors by Lees-McRae forced the Bobcats to take a timeout as the Cavaliers took a 23-20 lead. UVa-Wise would prevail in a tough second set, earning the 25-23 victory.
The Cavs continued their momentum going into the third set. Behind four kills and four digs by junior Ciara Kain, the Cavaliers earned a 25-20 win over the Bobcats. UVa-Wise dominated in the fourth set as they took a 13-5 lead over Lees-McRae. The Cavs continued to overpower the Bobcats as the team registered a .278 attack percentage, winning the final set, 25-10.
Kain posted a double-double with 13 kills and 20 digs against the Bobcats. Sophomore Morgan Milligan and freshman Makayla Ledford also had double-doubles with Milligan posting 17 assists and 19 digs while Ledford tallied 19 assists and 11 digs in the match. Sophomore Briana Kerr added 18 digs while junior Kyra Jessee had 13 digs in the win.
UVa-Wise volleyball will play two conference matchups on the road this weekend. The Cavs will face Fairmont State University on Friday, Oct. 20, at 7 p.m. and Shepherd University on Saturday, Oct. 21, at 4 p.m.
