Cavs Reach 20 Wins With DH Split at Concord

ATHENS, W.Va. --  UVa-Wise wrapped up the 2016 season with a doubleheader split at Concord University Sunday. The visiting Cavaliers claimed an 11-7 win in the season finale after dropping a 12-2 decision in the opener.

GAME TWO

Making his final collegiate start, right-hander Cody Jewell went out on top. The Manassas native tossed 7 1/3 innings allowing three earned runs to pick up the mound win.  Jewell scattered 12 hits in the win to aid UVa-Wise (20-30) to its first 20-win season since 2012.

The Cavaliers got on the board early as senior Ben Coffman lined a grand slam over the left field wall to put his team in front 4-0.

An inning later, Matt Wright knocked in Brett Yates to put UVa-Wise in front 5-1.

Concord (23-25) used a Trevor Wiersma RBI single to get on the board in the home half of the first before tying the game with a four-run third.

Senior Steven Klaiber put the Cavs back in front when he knocked in fellow senior Marcus Elmore in the fourth.

The Mountain Lions again tied the game when Andrew Seigel scored on a wild pitch in the fourth.

Ty Lighton put UVa-Wise in front for good in the top of the sixth when the senior lined the 200th hit of his collegiate career to score Elmore and Ryan Dickt. The hit put Lighton in an exclusive group as he became just the fifth Cavalier to ever reach the 200-hit plateau.

UVa-Wise tacked on two more runs in the seventh as Dickt and Yates picked up RBI hits to make it a 10-6 game.

The final run of the season for the Cavs came on David Thomas' base hit that allowed Coffman to scamper home in the eighth.

Trailing 11-6, Concord received a sacrifice fly off the bat of Brett Simons to make it 11-7 but would be unable to get any closer as Klaiber moved to the mound and retired all four batters he faced to seal the win.

Klaiber fanned the final two batters he saw to finish his pitching career on a high note, it was his first relief appearance of the season.

Six seniors for UVa-Wise had at least one at bat in the game. The seniors combined for seven hits, eight runs and seven RBIs.

GAME ONE

Concord scored eight unearned runs and overcame a 2-1 deficit with a nine-run third inning to claim the victory.

Klaiber was the only Cavalier to finish with multiple hits in the game as he finished 2-3 with an RBI.

Elmore was hit by a pitch in the game to give him the single-season school record. The Blacksburg, S.C. native was struck by a pitch in the second game as well to finish with 13 hit by pitches in 2016; former catcher Tommy Meier and first baseman Brock Funk previously held the record with 11 each.
