Klaiber Tosses CG, Reaches Base Six Times in DH Split at Charleston

CHARLESTON, W.Va. - - Steven Klaiber pitched a complete game and four Cavaliers had a multi-hit game as UVa-Wise defeated Charleston 5-3 in game one of Saturday's doubleheader at Triana Field. The host Golden Eagles took game two 7-1 behind seven shutout innings from Adam Jafine on the mound.

GAME ONE

UVa-Wise (16-24, 6-16 MEC) starter Steve Klaiber worked out of trouble in each of the first two innings before allowing a pair of runs in the third frame.

Charleston (11-28, 5-17 MEC) loaded the bases with nobody out in the frame following a bunt base hit by Jeff Sumok. A hitter later, Anthony Brunetti knocked in two with a base hit.

The Golden Eagles would miss an opportunity to put even more on the board as Klaiber would retire three of the inning's next four batters and leave the bases loaded.

Neither team would score again until the top of the fifth inning when Vinny Kuchenbuch scored on an error. Later in the frame, Marcus Elmore put UVa-Wise in front 3-2 with a two-RBI hit.

Ty Lighton delivered an insurance run in the seventh on a run-scoring triple before Klaiber helped his own cause by knocking in Lighton to make it a 5-2 going to the bottom of the frame.

Charleston would threaten in their last trip to the plate. The Golden Eagles would score an unearned run to make it 5-3 and would have the bases loaded with one out but, Klaiber would strike out the next two hitters to preserve the victory.

Klaiber (3-3) fanned seven and walked three in his fifth complete game effort of 2016. The senior scattered 11 hits while allowing just two earned runs.

Kaleb Kinder took the loss as the lefty was a victim of his defense. Kinder allowed just one earned run in six innings of work while allowing three hits and not walking a batter.

Elmore (3), Lighton (2) and Klaiber (2), UVa-Wise's top three hitters in the order combined for eight hits. Wright added a pair of hits to account for 10 of the club's 11 hits.

GAME TWO

Brunetti and Austin Hathaway knocked in a run each in the home first as Charleston jumped out to an early 2-0 advantage. The Golden Eagles would never look back as the hosts lined 11 hits in earing the doubleheader split.

Brice Arrington, Somuk and Burnetti all had multi-hit games in the win.

Lighton and Tye Marshall picked up three hits each in defeat.

Jared Finch was the losing pitcher as he surrendered six earned runs in six innings of work. Freshman Kellen Larkin tossed two innings of scoreless relief .

Jafine struck out 11 and walked five while scattering five hits in his scoreless appearance.
