WISE - - Lincoln Memorial came into Wednesday night's contest as one of NCAA Division II's top offensive teams. The Railsplitters proved why in an 18-8 triumph over the home standing UVa-Wise Cavaliers at Stallard Field.
Jean Rodriguez and Wes Neiderland each had an RBI in the top of the first as LMU (26-18) took an early 2-0 lead.
A pair of errors in the home half of the frame and a two-RBI single by Matt Wright allowed UVa-Wise (15-23) to take a 5-2 lead.
The lead would be short lived for Hank Banner's squad as the Railsplitters scored a trio of runs on a pair of RBI groundouts and a Cavalier error in the top of the second.
An RBI groundout by Ty Lighton would give UVa-Wise its final lead of the game when he knocked in Marcus Elmore to make it a 6-5 game going to the third frame.
LMU would erupt for five runs in the top of the third, two of the runs came on a two-run homer by Russell Clark.
Leading 10-6, the visitors cruised to the easy victory behind 19 hits.
Logan Augustine and Russell Clark picked up four hits each. Clark knocked in four runs and scored two while Augustine picked up two RBIs and scored twice.
Lighton and Cody Jewell were the only Cavaliers with multi-hit games as each player collected two hits.
Cody Hinson (1-0) picked up the mound win by allowing a run in an inning of relief.
Six different Cavalier hurlers allowed 16 earned runs. As a staff, UVa-Wise walked 10 batters and hit three more.
The two teams combined for seven errors, five of the runs the Cavs scored were unearned.
In total, five Railsplitters had two or more hits, including four with at least three hits.
Next up for UVa-Wise is a return to league play. The Cavs will travel to the University of Charleston this weekend for a four-game series.
