WISE, Va. – UVa-Wise men's tennis defeated Berea College (Ky.) 9-0 Sunday afternoon for the Cavaliers (4-5, 0-1 MEC) first win of the spring season.
 
The Cavs did not drop a set Sunday as the visiting Mountaineers (0-1) were only able to play five players. UVa-Wise earned default wins at No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles due to Berea College playing a man down.
 
The No. 1 doubles tandem of senior Vladyslav Akimenko (Donetsk, Ukraine) and sophomore Andrii Rutnytskyi (Odessa, Ukraine) took down Berea College's Zac White and Clayton Cooper, 8-3, before the duo of senior Oleg Kopychenko (Simferopol, Ukraine) and sophomore Viktor Tunnikov (Kharkiv, Ukraine) earned an 8-1 win at second doubles over the Mountaineers' Joel Deutscher and James Weaver.
 
Sophomore Christopher Armistead (Virginia Beach, Va.) and Kopychenko made quick work of their opponents as each earned 6-0, 6-0 singles victories. Armistead defeated the Mountaineers' Dylan Imbus at No. 5 singles, while Kopychenko handed Cooper a loss at the third spot.
 
Tunnikov only gave up a total of two games in a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Berea College's Weaver at No. 4 singles. Akimenko did much of the same at the top singles spot, earned a 6-2, 6-0 win over the Mountaineers' White.
 
In the last match to finish of the day, Rutnytskyi was a 6-1, 6-3 winner at No. 2 singles against Deutscher of Berea College.
 
The Cavs will now travel to Montreat, North Carolina, next Sunday for a non-conference match at 12 p.m. against Montreat College.
