Sandidge Clutch in 2OT Win at West Virginia Wesleyan

Box Score

BUCKHANNON, W.Va. - - Taylor Sandidge scored 10 of her season-high 28 points in double overtime as UVa-Wise snapped a seven-game road losing streak with an 80-76 double overtime victory over West Virginia Wesleyan at the Rockefeller Center Saturday.

UVa-Wise (10-10, 6-10 MEC) trailed by as many as 12 points late in the third quarter and by four with just over three minutes to play in the second overtime but, Sandidge refused to let her team lose. The Waynesboro native scored all 10 of her overtime points over the final 2:43 to carry her team across the finish line.

After falling behind by four, Sandidge canned her only 3-point attempt of the game from the right wing to cut the deficit to 70-69 with 2:43 remaining. The guard then boarded a Bobcats' miss and raced the length of the floor before dishing to Kehana Grayer for a two-point bucket giving her team the lead at 71-70.

West Virginia Wesleyan (5-15, 3-14 MEC) responded with an Allie Browne layup to regain the advantage.

After a pair of free throws by Allison Ball gave the Cavaliers a 73-72 lead, Sandidge would make seven of eight free throws down the stretch to claim their first road Mountain East Conference victory of the year.

Wesleyan had cut the lead to two at 78-76 with just over four seconds to play but, Bobcats' Head Coach Michael Bari was assessed a technical foul for calling a timeout. His club had used its full allotment of timeouts earlier in the overtime session.

The Bobcats seemingly put the game away late in the third period. Wesleyan closed the quarter on 12-3 run to push the lead to 54-45. Bari's team had run the lead to 12 and was at the line with an opportunity to push the advantage even further but Tara Goldman missed two free throws in the closing seconds of the quarter. UVa-Wise rebounded the miss and Natalia Saar hit a high arching 3-pointer at the horn to bring the score back within single digits.

Saar's 3-pointer gave the team momentum moving to the fourth quarter. Kristin Kunzman's team took a lead with 4:21 to play on a bucket inside by Sandidge. In total, the Cavs posted a 20-2 run that saw them gain a 62-56 lead.

Mari Stewart, Goldman and Adrian Cunningham would score the game's next six points to tie the game with just over a minute to play.

Neither team would be able to score over the remainder of regulation as the game moved to overtime.

The first extra session saw neither team take more than a two-point lead as the Cavs' Kayla Carey missed a shot that would have won the game in regulation.

The stamina of Sandidge however would prove to be the difference as she played 50 minutes for the second time this season.

Carey recorded 10 of her 20 points in the first half while Grayer added 15 points. Sandidge collected 10 rebounds while handing out four assists in a double-double performance.

Stewart posted 24 points while Goldman reached the 20-point mark on 7-12 shooting. Stewart corralled 11 boards while Goldman picked up 12 as both women had double-doubles in defeat.

The win completes a season-series sweep of West Virginia Wesleyan for UVa-wise and marked their sixth consecutive win over the Bobcats since the formation of the MEC.

UVa-Wise shot just 39.2 percent for the game but made 15-18 free throw attempts, including 9-10 in the overtime periods to claim the win.

The Cavs collected 16 offensive rebounds en route to edging the Bobcats 50-49 on the boards.

Sandidge passed 900 career points in the win; she now has 911 points in 77 collegiate games.

Next up is a trip to Wheeling Jesuit University on Thursday, tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. and the action can be heard on www.uvawisecavs.com
