RALEIGH, N.C. - - Steven Klaiber tossed a complete game while Ryan Dickt and Bryan Andrews had two hits and scored two runs each in a 7-1 game one victory before Tye Marshall and Matt Wright combined for five hits, three runs and two RBIs in a 6-3 game two victory as UVa-Wise swept St. Augustine's at Lions Park Sunday. The doubleheader sweep is the second of the year for the Cavaliers who are now 5-3 on their season opening 11-game road trip.
UVa-Wise (5-3) wasted little time getting its offense going in the opener. Leadoff man Ty Lighton walked to open the game before moving to second on a single by Dickt. Each runner moved up 90 feet on a passed ball before Ben Coffman doubled home Lighton. A hitter later, Dickt and Coffman scored when Marshall lifted a fly ball to left field that was misplayed.
Hank Banner's club would add one more run in its first at bat of the day on a run-scoring hit by Brett Yates.
Staked to a 4-0 lead, Klaiber pounded the strike zone. The senior struck out seven against just one walk while scattering six hits. St. Augustine's (1-11) failed to have runner reach third base until the fourth inning when Alex Garcia doubled home William Thomas.
It would be the only blemish of the day on Klaiber's record as the Roanoke native picked up his first mound victory of 2016.
Offensively, the Cavs added a pair of runs in the second on a Dickt RBI single and a Falcons error.
Klaiber drove home the seventh run of the game when his two-out RBI double scored Andrews in the fourth.
Following St. Augustine's run in the fourth, Klaiber did not allow more than one baserunner in any inning over the remainder of the contest.
Sean Brassington was saddled with the loss after allowing seven runs in six innings of work. Brassington was a victim of his own team's defense. Just one of the hurler's seven runs was earned.
As a team, the Falcons committed three errors while the Cavs played errorless baseball in the win.
Seven players lined at least one hit for UVa-Wise, Carey Cheek added two hits for St. Augustine's.
Game two saw the Cavs jump out in front in the top of the first inning for the second time of the day. Lighton reached on an error to begin the game before swiping second. The Ashburn native eventually scored on a RBI groundout by Klaiber.
This time, the lead would be short lived. St. Augustine's plated two in the home half of the first on a two-out, two-RBI single by Jonathan Sierra.
A half inning later UVa-Wise tied the game on a RBI single by Wright before regaining the lead when Lighton's singled to score Wright, giving the visitors a 3-2 lead moving to the bottom of the second.
The Falcons tied the game in the home half of the frame. Tyquan Bryant walked and stole second before scoring on Darrell Langston's RBI single.
Cody Jewell would halt the damage at just a run as Wright made a nice play on a sacrifice bunt before Jewell struck out Cheek and ended the frame when Garcia was out on a fielder's choice.
A third consecutive scoring inning put the Cavs up for good in the top of the third. Doubles by Klaiber and Yates scored the first run of the frame before Wright lined the third double of the inning scoring Yates and giving the visitors a 5-3 lead.
Jewell settled down after the second inning, turning in three consecutive scoreless innings before turning the game over to Jared Finch.
While Jewell was posting zero after zero so was his counterpart Timothy Carter. Carter would hold UVa-Wise scoreless over the remainder of his stint before turning it over to Cheek who continued the strong pitching performance.
UVa-Wise failed to put pressure on St. Augustine's again  until the seventh when the team added an insurance run for Finch. After the first three hitters reached, freshman David Thomas worked a bases loaded walk to score Marshall, producing the team's sixth run of the game.
The Falcons would put the leadoff man on base in the seventh inning via an error but a fly out and a 6-4-3 double play ended the threat and secured the sweep for the Cavs.
With two more hits in game two, Wright finished the doubleheader with three hits. Marshall picked up three hits and three RBIs on the day while Klaiber extended his hitting streak to five consecutive games with a 1-4 showing at the plate.
Jewell pitched five innings of three-run baseball to pick up the win. Two of the runs were earned as he struck out four to improve to 2-0 on the year. Finch's two shutout innings allowed him to pick up the second save of his collegiate career.
The same two teams will be back at it at 12:30 p.m. Monday for a doubleheader to wrap up the four-game set.
