WIN - WIN - WIN - WIN! Cavs Complete Sweep of Falcons

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

RALEIGH, N.C. - - UVa-Wise used a trio of homers to claim game one 7-6 before receiving four innings of shutout baseball from its bullpen in a 6-3 win in game two to complete a four-game series sweep of St. Augustine's at Lions Park Monday.

UVa-Wise (7-3) took advantage of an error to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning in the opener. Cody Jewell walked with one out and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Marcus Elmore. Following a passed ball, the senior scampered home when Ty Lighton's bunt base hit attempt was misplayed.

St. Augustine's (1-13) answered back in the home half of the frame on an RBI groundout by Corey Brassington and a run-scoring hit by Darrell Langston to take a 2-1 lead.

The Cavaliers would use the long ball to regain the lead. Steven Klaiber hit a solo homer in the third before Elmore's second home run of the year put his team in front 3-2 in the fourth.

A passed ball allowed the visitors to extend the lead to 4-2 in the fifth inning before Ryan Dickt hit UVa-Wise's third homer of the game to make the score 5-2 in the sixth.

While the offense was putting up runs, junior left-hander Nathan Hatmaker was making quick work of the Falcons. The Harrogate, Tenn. native allowed just three hits in his five innings of work before turning the game over the bullpen.

Freshman Alex Dobry would pitch a scoreless sixth to send the game to the seventh with the Cavs leading 5-2.

Ben Coffman seemingly put the game out of reach for Hank Banner's club when he knocked in two runs with a two-RBI single.

While Coffman's insurance runs seemed meaningless at the time, they proved crucial.

St. Augustine's would score four runs with two outs in the seventh before Jared Finch came on to record the final out with the winning run at the plate, preserving the 7-6 win.

It was Finch's second save in as many days as he also notched a save in game two of the series.

Coffman picked up a pair of hits in the win while Elmore scored twice. UVa-Wise ran wild on the bases as four different players swiped a bag.

The win was the first of the year for Hatmaker (1-0) while Finch lowered his ERA to 2.84 in 12.2 innings of work this year.

William Thomas finished 3-3 at the plate for the Falcons, the first baseman knocked in a pair of runs and added a walk in his four plate appearances.

Game two saw UVa-Wise once again strike first. Dickt lined a one-out hit in the top of the first before advancing to second when Steven Klaiber was hit by a pitch. Both Cavs scored when Coffman hit a three-run homer over the left field wall.

As was the story in the opener, St. Augustine's responded in the home half of the inning. The first three Falcons reached base but the hosts ran into an out on the bases when Thomas doubled and Cameron Lopez tried to score on the play. The second baseman was thrown out 7-5-2 to keep the game at 3-0.

Alexis Garcia would plate the first run of the game for the Falcons when his infield single allowed Carey Cheek to score. A hitter later, Ricardo Martin's sacrifice fly brought Thomas home making the score 3-2 after an inning of play.

Freshman Dylan Luttrell would settle down from that point. Making his first collegiate start, the right-hander got a fly ball to get out of the inning before striking out the side in the second.

Lighton extended the lead to two runs in the visiting half of the second with a sacrifice fly that scored Matt Wright.

Thomas' big-day at the plate continued for St. Augustine's in the third when his two-run home run tied the game at 4-4.

The game would remain tied until the top of the sixth when the speed of Elmore paid dividends for UVa-Wise. The senior singled through the left side with one out and wasted little time swiping second base. Lighton brought the Blacksburg, S.C. product home with an opposite field run-scoring hit.

The Cavs added a run later in the frame when Dickt doubled home Lighton to put his team six outs away from a four-game sweep.

After freshman Noah Collins picked up the first out of the sixth to complete a stellar relief appearance, the game would be turned over to junior Chase Patrylak.

The former Princess Anne High School standout allowed just one hit over the remainder of the game while striking out two to pick up the save.

Collins took home the second mound victory of his young collegiate career by tossing 2.1 innings of scoreless relief.

Collins and Patrylak combined for four strikeouts, one hit allowed and two walks in four innings of work.

Dickt and Tye Marshall had two hits each while Coffman (3) and Lighton (2) combined for five RBIs.

UVa-Wise is scheduled to complete its season-opening 11-game road trip Wednesday at Tusculum. First pitch is slated for 5 p.m.
