Box Score WISE - - Laura Szorenyi scored 31 points to lead a quartet of Yellow Jackets in double-figure scoring as West Virginia State overcame a 40-37 halftime deficit to post an 88-78 win over UVa-Wise at the Prior Center Thursday.
West Virginia State (13-14, 10-11 MEC) completed a season sweep of UVa-Wise with the victory as the visitors connected on 51.7 percent of their field goal attempts while also making 25 of 34 free throws.
Szorenyi was 8-12 from the field while converting 11 of 13 free throw attempts. Teammate Deyahnna Styles added 21 points while dishing out five assists. Alexus Hobbs finished two rebounds shy of a double-double as she netted 11 points; the fourth Yellow Jacket to finish in double figure scoring was Trina Current who chipped in 10 points and nine rebounds off the bench.
UVa-Wise (11-14, 7-14 MEC) shot 41.7 percent from the field in the opening half. Senior Blair Harding scored 14 of her team-high 21 points in the half as she made a pair of 3-pointers as part of a six-field goal effort in the first half.
West Virginia State scored the opening two buckets of the second half as Styles scored inside and Szorenyi put one in off a UVa-Wise turnover. The fast start to the second half gave the Yellow Jackets a 41-40 lead, they would not trail again in the contest.
A 3-point play by Szorenyi at the 3:12 mark of the third period gave West Virginia State its first double digit lead of the contest at 58-48.
UVa-Wise would cut the lead to six going to the fourth quarter thanks to consecutive buckets by Kayla Carey in the final minute of the third period.
A Taylor Sandidge layup and a made free throw by Harding had Kristin Kunzman's club within three at 62-59 with nine minutes to play.
West Virginia State would outscore UVa-Wise 26-19 over the remainder of the game to pick up the 88-78 road win.
Kehana Grayer and Harding were honored post game as part of "Senior Night 2016". The pair has started 98 games over the last two seasons. Grayer has been a two-year captain while Harding has been the team's leading scorer over each of the last two seasons.
Sandidge finished with 17 points while freshman Alle Moore came off the bench to post 16 points in 21 minutes of action.
The result ensures the Cavs of playing on the road in the opening round in next week's league tournament. The MEC Tournament pairings will be released Saturday evening.
