WISE, Va. – UVa-Wise welcomes NCAA Division III Berea College (Ky.) to the David J. Prior Convocation Center Thursday for a 7 p.m. tipoff.
The Mountaineers enter Thursday night's matchup having won four straight and boasting of a 6-3 record. Berea College most recently won a 77-62 road contest at Spalding University Tuesday night and have won their last four games by an average margin of 23 points. Averaging 82.7 points per game as a team and making 9.1 3-pointers per contest, the Mountaineers are giving up 73 points per game.
The Cavaliers enter Thursday night averaging 78.8 points per game while allowing opponents to score 89.5 points per contest.
Berea is guided by head coach John Hemenway who is in his seventh season at the helm. Hemenway has accumulated a 102-83 overall record while at Berea and posted his 100th win with the Mountaineers earlier this season after a 96-52 home win over Crown College on Dec. 1. He collected his 200th career coaching victory last December with an 81-76 win over Indiana University Northwest and has taken Berea to two consecutive United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) Division I national tournaments, posting a 35-13 regular season record over the last two seasons.
Senior 6-foot-1 guard Richard Parker leads the Mountaineers this season averaging 24.3 points per game, while 5-foot-9 senior guard Anthony Myrks-Brewer is averaging 15.3 points per game on 50.6 percent shooting and a team-leading 4.1 assists per game. Sophomore 6-foot-6 forward Jair Jackson leads the team in rebounding with 7.3 boards per game and is shooting the ball at 57.9 percent (8 ppg) through nine games this season.
UVa-Wise and Berea have not faced each other since the 2007-08 season and have only met three times in the last 10 years. The Cavs own a 2-1 advantage in those three contests with UVa-Wise winning the last meeting 102-98 in double overtime at Berea on Nov. 10, 2007. The two teams faced off twice during the 2006-07 season with the Cavs stealing a 64-61 road win on Nov. 25, 2006, before being defeated by Berea 61-59 at home on Dec. 18, 2006.
UVa-Wise is looking to snap a seven-game skid after opening up the season with an overtime neutral-site victory over Elizabeth City State College. Most recently, the Cavs were handed a 60-point loss at NCAA Division I Wofford College in an exhibition contest Tuesday night. The Terriers shot an astounding 70.3 percent (45-of-64) from the floor in the game, the highest field goal percentage of any Division I team in a game this season.
Freshman point guard
Michal Seals (Lancaster, Pa.) continued his fine play as of late in that game, collecting a team-high 15 points on 6-of-8 shooting. Last week, Seals averaged 16.5 points, seven assists and five rebounds per game in a pair of losses.
